Is my engine original

I bought a 86 4runner a few years back and now its time to start fixin it up.My question is, how do I know if my engine is original.I found a 7 digit number on the block(pretty oily and hard to see), but what does that tell me.I called a dealership and they said the engine # should match the last digits of the VIN# which it doesnt.He also said he wasnt really sure.
Anyways glad I found this board, it is a wealth of info and everyone seems real friendly and helpful.I know I'll be on here alot.

There shpuld be another VIN plate on the passenger side fender in the engine bay with the # on it.
