is my hardshifting and delayed shifting normal??

my 99 4runner limited when started from cold has a bit of a kick when going from 2nd to 3rd.. as well when changing between these gears the rpms sit around 2500 for what feels like a few seconds too long before shifting into 3rd.. when it warms up its better, but i wouldnt say that is horrific or anything when cold.. this is my first 4runner and ive driven 5spds for way too long almost any auto feels foreign to me

Mine does the same thing everryyyy morning. It's perfectly normal! The 4Runner holds the engine at higher rpms to help the engine warm up more quickly.

Something like that isn't isolated to 4runners when they are running cold. The question is, has it always done that or is it something you've just noticed recently? Sorry, don't know how long you've owned it. Maybe it's your first experience with it in a colder season? If not, and it seems unusual, wouldn't hurt to check and make sure you aren't getting "milkshaked". But it sounds more consistent with it just being cold.

I've had this same problem lately where before it wasn't an issue... Warm or cold..

It's in 2nd gear then all of a sudden forgets to shift and drops hard into 3rd...

It doesn't happen all the time but it has been happening more frequently lately..

Any ideas anyone?...

I changed my transmission fluid about 1-2 months ago

Make sure the fluid is at the right level when hot. That can affect shifting.

and just to clarify...


what is the right level?...

i checked the trans dip stick when engine was "cold" and the fluid level seemed to be way above the "hot" mark...

i need a tutorial on how to read trans dip stick!
