Is my mechanic full of Siht?

I've used this guy in the past a few times and he seems like a good guy. Last week he replaced both front rotors and pads. About two days later I noticed that when I turn hard left, all the way to the lock, I get out loud metal on metal grinding noise. The noise only happens when driving forward, reverse is totally quiet.

I pulled the wheel off and took a look around and couldn't find any obvious signs of metal on metal contact. I also tried to duplicate the noise by spinning the wheel by hand with the truck on a jack. Nothing, the noise only happens with weight on the wheels and turning hard left and only moving forward.

I called the mechanic, described what I said above. He said it sounds like a wheel bearing. Does that sound right?

Also...I have the VSC and TRAC OFF lights. Ran the code at AutoZone and it came back as an ABS sensor and EVAP leak. He says that makes sense because there are ABS sensors in the wheel bearings.

Is any of this true? It seems fishy to me.

Sounds plausible to me. The abs sensor sits right in there. If it's damaged, it would throw those lights.
 
That's completely possible.

Jack the vehicle back up and wiggle the suspected wheel & tire in and out and try to move it up and down. If you feel any play, your wheel bearing is probably bad.
 
Hmmm. I do not know if that would be the wheel bearing. Last time I did my brakes, I accidentally bent (ever so slightly), the metal dust shield on the back of the rotor. Going forward, it sounded like metal grinding on metal. Backwards, I did not hear anything. Weird. I pulled the wheel off, and gently pried it away from the rotor and problem solved. In defense of your mechanic, trying to diagnose something based on second hand information can be damned tricky.

Do you have the DTC numbers? It could be the dust shield, I had the same thing happen to me when I replaced my front differential.

Also I would assume your mechanic is at least partially full of fecal matter, otherwise I would be concerned about his digestive system and/or eating habits. :fish:
 
Could be true for sure but since it started after the brake job id check the dust shield like preacher35 said. Ive bent plenty of them doing brake jobs and now i give the rotor a spin before i put the wheel back on just to make sure the dust shield is clear of the rotor. Give that a look and while your there try to wiggle the wheel to inspect the wheel bearing.

When I pulled the wheel off I fully expected to find the rotor rubbing the dust shield. Going strictly by the type of metallic rubbing noise it makes, that was my guess. I didn't find any sign of that tho...not saying it's not happening, only that my untrained eye didn't see it.

He's coming back out tonight. We'll see what he finds.

Coming back out? A mechanic that does house calls? Then you day he's full of fecal matter, those are one in a billion. he's a keeper just because he does house calls
