Is my transmission going out?

Hello,

When putting the 4runner in drive it will not ingage and then takes a min. and with a big "clunk" off we go. This also happens when going into R.

Aprox 150,000 miles.

It took a minute to ingage? Few seconds would be okay but a minute? That's not good. I recommend going to the shop and get it fix. Yes, it might be your transmission.

I get that same 'clunk' noise in the morning when i shift into reverse. I always think because its cold and needs to be warmed up. When i arrive home and park on a slightly slanted hill and pull my ebrake and shift into park...i get that 'clunking' noise when i ease off the brake. Is it a big deal? i have like 87k on it.

Yes thats not good/when was the last tranny fluid changed/flushed?

Have you checked the tranny fluid level?

I read somewhere (either here or yotatech) that the clunk you are hearing is the drive shaft. There are grease fittings on it somewhere. Mine did the same thing when I bought it ('02 w/ 95,000 miles). I had the oil changed at the dealer and told them to be sure and grease it. No clunking now.

We had the transmission flushed Feb. 04. The guys said the fluid was black and should of been done sooner.

sometimes flushing does more harm than good... i would definitely check the fluid level.

Thats what the trani guy said last year when they flushed it. They warrned us that sometimes after a flushing the trani will not respond and has to be replace.

I'm experiencing similar problems, but only in D. After hearing about flushing the tranny fluid. I'm thinking its better to just top it off. But why is it exactly the tranny goes bad after a flush?

The flush loosens up built up gunk(fluid) in the system and then clogs the valves and passages in the tranny.

It is known that if the fluid has never been changed you are better off just leaving it be.
