Is my V8 slow?

I'm also a former (and current) fast car guy. I think some of the guys who think the 4Runner is fast (or even quick) probably were in a slow vehicle before getting into their 4Runner. It's all relative.

But I still say that the average car on the road will pretty much smoke a 4th gen 4Runner and crush any earlier gen 4Runner. Think about it-- the average 4-door sedan with a simple 6 cylinder engine will easily out-accelerate a 4Runner (V6 or V8). Any Hemi-powered truck or SUV (think Grand Cherokee, Commander, Durango, etc..) will also smoke us. The only place we're considered fast at all is against some other SUVs/trucks or some economy cars. But that's okay in my book because my 4Runner is fast enough to get out of it's own way on the road and I'm not too concerned with drag racing someone that I encounter on the road!
 
Nowhere have I seen mentioned the most critical aspect of all of this.

The published horsepower / torque numbers are rough guides at best.

Manufacturing tolerances, environmental factors during test, and the relative strength of the engineering vs marketing vs legal departments in the corporate structure can all conspire to make a hash of the published #'s.

You want to know the specs to a degree of accuracy sufficient to have this discussion? Take the thing to someplace that has a dyno. And that will only give you numbers at the drive wheels, as there are losses in the drivetrains that won't show there.

Car and Driver tested a 2003 V8 4Runner in Nov of 2002 and recorded a 0-60 time of 8.0 seconds flat. In 2005 they tested another V8 4Runner and recorded a 15.7 / 88 mph 1/4 mile run.

Personally I'm more impressed by the 4Runner SE braking numbers of 70-0 in 170 feet. That's pretty impressive for a vehicle it's size.
 
You always have enough horsepower until you need more and can't get any:D

Personally I bought the V8 over the V6 for the extra torque:cool:

Nice job backpedaling. You can say what you want, but when you made the claim that you've never been "smoked" by a Hemi powered vehicle, then most people would take that as one of two things--either you beat one or you kept even with one. If you've ever raced one and lost, it doesn't matter if you lost by an inch or a mile, you still weren't able to keep up.




Its easy to figure out the average 0-60 time for cars sold today (although very very time consuming), just find the 0-60 time for each car, find the North American sales volume for each car, and multiply those figures. Unfortunately this has to be done for each type of car. Then, you add up the total. Then divide it by the total number of cars sold in North America. Presto, average 0-60 time. Thats a daunting task, there are probably several hundred types of cars sold in NA and you have to know the sales volume and 0-60 for each and every one. But it is possible.


Sorry, but I don't think that's easy, as you say. Besides, that's still not a representative sample of vehicles on any road at any given time. Maybe you need to take a class in statistics. I'll break this down for you--here's the flaw in your logic: Even if you had all the information that you mentioned, just how many of the fastest of those cars do you think you're likely to encounter on the road every day? Think about some of the more expensive cars...you know, the Ferraris and Lambos that spend 99% of their time locked in a garage. Once again, it's easy to see how quickly the numbers would be useless by trying to determine averages by using sales numbers.




You can beat the dead horse all you want, I will call my 4Runner fast, I will dig up numbers, and my engineering degree says screw horsepower. .


First, this isn't a HP debate. It's a debate on the concept that the 4Runner is a fast vehicle. Of course that's subjective and depends upon the view of the driver/owner. If I drove a Hummer H1 for 3 years and then got a 4Runner, I'd think it was a rocket. At the same time, if I traded in my Corvette after driving it for 3 years for a 4Runner, I'd definitely think the 4Runner felt slow. Now here's the funny part--if I traded in a basic V6 Nissan Altima for a 4Runner, I'd also feel the 4Runner was slow.

BTW, you should really stop bragging about your engineering degree. It seems like you have to mention it every other time you post. This has to be at least the tenth time I read a post of yours where you mention your engineering degree. Seriously, I'm sure you're proud of it, but give it a rest already. I also have an engineering degree and an MBA as well, but you don't see me telling everyone over and over again.

That's funny. I currently do have a V6 4Runner. I also had a V8 4Runner prior to buying the V6 4Runner. So to say I regret makes no sense at all. As an owner of both, I'd honestly say that I just don't need the V8 engine in my 4Runner, which is basically why I went with the V6 the second time around. If anything, I wish I would have purchased a V6 4Runner in the first place instead of the V8 because I don't tow anything more than Jet Skis and don't need the extra towing capacity.

Besides, if I feel the need for speed, I have a car that can take care of that itch like neither of my 4Runners could ever have... LOL

Yeah, sorry for messing up your thread. It did get a bit carried away. I guess the BS was getting too deep for me, so I had to say something! LOL.

But if you ever do that race, definitely let us know the results.

On a side note, it can be amazing how two vehicles with similar power and speed can feel completely different, yet perform very much the same. Maybe you'll find that your 4Runner is every bit as quick as your wife's vehicle.
 
OK, here are the results. My wife had to follow me somewhere a few days ago on the highway. We both maintained a slow highway speed for a bit then floored the accelerators at the same time up to about 90mph. Both trucks were dead even.

Although completely unscientific and revealing nothing about acceleration off the line, it proved to me that my 4Runner is making the same HP as her GX470. I feel better now.

I've come up with a couple of guesses why I was originally thinking her truck was faster than mine. They are:

1. The extra mass (approx. 600 lbs.) of the GX compared with the T4R may have given the sensation of more quickness.

2. The gas pedal of the GX is much more sensitive than the T4R. Give it a tap and you take off. By comparison, I've got to really hit the pedal hard in the T4R to get it moving at the same rate of accelaration.
