is RWD deafault in 4Runner?

just want to be sure before I pull the trigger because I come from rav4 where FWD was default and this sucks. Always wanted to have RWD. I understand 4WD can be turn on manually right?

For the V6 yes, V8 is full time 4WD

x2. Even though it is full-time (for both v8 and V6 in 4wd mode), there is rear bias in the power distribution (30/70 i think) by the Torsen III center differential. The power distribution changes depending on traction and whether you're going around a corner or not, but for the most part (e.g. going straight), i believe that there is a rear bias.

And there are 2WD V8 4Runners as well. Not all V8s are AWDs, only the V8 4WD models are all AWDs...or at least V8 2WDs are available where I live. I understand it that isn't the case in every part of the country tho.

I know this because my dealership messed up when they ordered mine and ordered a Limited V8 2WD when what I had paid for (and eventually received) was the V8 4WD model.

If the difference in price is significant probably I'll get 2WD version.

For the purposes of learning, why is RWD what you're looking for/better? I'm under the idea that FWD is better for bad road conditions since its power and steering.

no, it's not - car with RWD is better balanced thanks to spinning drive shaft under the car. Handling and safety is much better because of that. Also it's superior to have separated power and steering. In FWD when you skidding you out of both - power and steering, in opposite to RWD.
Why do you think would they do RWD only in high end vehicles like BMW, Mercedes etc.???
Been driving in the past in car racing on RWD car and I can tell there no comparison whatsoever between RWD and FWD car - the latter is manufacture only because it is cheaper.

p.s.
also with RWD you can easily control side drifting with the steering wheel and accelerator without using hand break.
