driving a "whoops" section for a couple hours straight. I remember sleeping very well after we got to our destination both nights (we split the drive into 2 days).

So yeah, there are few things in life that compare to driving a Wrangler cross country. If you're into masochism, I highly recommend it. :laugh: :cheers:

I did a trip in my runner from California to Texas, Colorado, Wyoming, Utah. I took out the bottom of the back seat to fit a 3" foam mattress in the back to save on hotels on the road, used AirBnb in Austin/Denver/SLC. The runner was super comfortable, even going 90-95 due to 85 speed limit, it wasn't too loud, and fit everything necessary.

Oh best thing was never getting shit in Texas for California plates, I'm guessing that would be different if it was a Prius.

That is true. I see lots of 5th gen 4Runner these days as compared to 4-5 years ago. And its good for everybody I think(4runner owners), cause lots of parts used and new, would be available for cheaper price..

The wife and I were actually looking to get a Nissan Xterra, but they've been out of the market for a while, and while the used ones were holding value, we wanted to buy new. This forced us to look for other options, Jeep & 4Runner seemed to be the only options that really met our desired capabilities and budget.

The 5th gen isn’t the new fan boy vehicle. It has been in production for 8 years now. Of course you are going to see more of them and more that have modifications. Take a look at Wranglers. You can’t throw a rock in any direction and not hit a modified Wrangler. Any capable off road vehicle will start getting mods eventually. Around Vegas Jeeps are king. Even cougars have traded in their Mercedes for decked out Jeeps. Raptors are close behind followed by Tacos. Then comes anything that you can put flared fenders on easily to make it look like a go fast truck followed maybe by 4runner’s.

Everyone in TX is used to people from CA invading. We used to be able to look at a vehicle an tell the students from the invaders, but not anymore.
For now their money is good for the economy.

Some of these folks are easy to spot. When I drive my 3rd gen, people who are true enthusiasts rubber neck like crazy as do I. The ones who don't even bat an eye proabably don't wheel even though they have a lift and tires. I am seeing a lot of females driving TRD Pros around and they never look.

I would avoid the Xterra if you are really going to wheel. I had two, a 2003 and a 2006. They were great for traveling, lots of room and they do stay planted to the road in all conditions. They are very well built and are reliable but they dont really have much off road prowess. I had the manual trans in mine and they did not experience the issue with the mix of trans and coolant the autos had.

100% agree with the OP. I had 4 BMW's at one point not even a few weeks ago, some new, some older, I got TIRED of fixing the little/big things here and there nearly every day after work, my weekends, days off, etc. I got to a point where I decided that I was done, I wanted to be out of the garage traveling and enjoying a care-free rig. I settled on the 4runner because I loved the look and have always liked the 3rd gens as a kid and you can't go wrong with the reliability and capability.

Sadly though, as you mentioned, everyone and their grandmas have one. Usually jacked up, big tires, ladder, "mall crawlers". I honestly lose count of how many 5th gen 4runners I can spot in a normal 30 minute commute to work - most of these people having bought them like that. It's almost disappointing because i'm pretty outgoing and like to approach people and ask them about their cars but so far 90% of the time its usually some housewife, much, much older person, or someone that just bought the car and still has the dealer plates on it pushing it out of the sand because they got stuck...

I haven't read all the post in this topic so this might of been mentioned already.

Yes way more on the road now, a fad(?) who knows, but I don't care at all because just think of all the used T4Rs that will be on the market in the future for those of us that would never put out the $s it cost for a new one, I have never bought a new vehicle, too much value lost as soon as you drive it off the lot, I have always paid cash for a vehicle, hate payments but hate the interest and immediate lost of value even more!!
