Is the 4Runner becoming the new fan boy vehicle?

Yes and No.
I think the 4Runners have ALWAYS been such a popular car/truck to own for most American households.. Hell.. Look at how many 3rd gens there are still on the road.
Now... For the fan boy aspect, especially for the overland crowd... Hell yes. I'll constantly see modded up 4Runners with a RTT, lift, awning, etc, being show car clean.
Hell, had this one older gentleman at safeway walk into me and ask about my rig, and was stunned I didn't care to scratch my car from wheeling. And get this... He was fully modded... Front/Rear bumper, winch, snorkel, RTT, Prinsu roof rack, Light bars for days, IVD suspension, full skids, The whole 9 yards... And once I saw that "Overland Bound" sticker.. I just knew... and the guy didn't disappoint. LMAO

Funny. I live here in Vegas as well and besides seeing 4runners with just a lift and rims which half the trucks and Jeeps in Vegas have, I don’t see that many modded out 4runners and the amount of lifted ones I see is really negligible. I just see the same ones over and over. I can’t drive more than 5 minutes without seeing multiple decked out JK’s with every mod under the sun! I see 20 times or more Tacos with bumpers etc. on them than 4runners. Heck, I probably see 10 times the amount of Raptors decked out.

Lots of 4x4 owners out there that never leave the pavement. Lol. I bought my 4Runner because my truck was getting old and I wanted a new, reliable SUV.
I've been off roading for hunting and rock hounding for 40 years but never owned a vehicle that could do more than fairly tame Forest Service roads. I always wanted a Jeep but looking at the Consumer Reports reliablity reports talked me out of it every time because stranded in the woods is not my kind of adventure. I kept hoping they'd finally fix them right.
In the mean time, my Explorer's heated seats and air conditioning spoiled me good. When it wore out I accidently found out about the 4Runner, checked out the reliability reports and found them outstanding, and saw the Premium would satisfy my need for comfort. I was sold.
Never planned to do any mods and couldn't even find running boards I liked. Better looking rock sliders worked for as a step for my wife so I thought, why not? After installing, I must say it was simply naked without them. Suddenly, the stock tires were all wrong, too, and it looks even better with some tread showing.
I plan a lot more mods now that I've seen what others have done and am so glad I am not putting all this time and money into a Jeep that would leave me stranded somewhere.
So while you may see my air conditioned eye candy parked at the mall, look closely and you'll see the scratches down both sides of it that tell you it's been down some mighty narrow paths.
Heck yes it's trendy..for all the right reasons.

Good grief, this is a successful, mass produced vehicle. Each 4Runner comes off the assembly line identical to hundreds of thousands others.
If you want to be an SUV hipster, maybe it's time to push on to a Tata Safari ... 'cause you're not special anymore.

I bought mine as my daily because I wanted 4WD/AWD.I began working for a Toyota dealership and fell for the 4Runners. I can't afford to buy or lease a current gen so, I found a 4th gen I liked. Beyond sound system upgrades, interior lighting upgrades, and a bar with lights on the front I'm not modding it (Yes, I'm a poseur). I could be swayed to get some other wheels at some point (I tend switch the wheels out on whatever I drive)

I was in highschool 1972-76 got a custom van in 73.
Back then if you had a stabbin cabin you got laid.

I’m happy when I see another 4Runner driving around, regardless of generation, trim level, mods, or whatever. But it’s cool to see what people do to their vehicles. I don’t have those DIY skills yet so it’s kind of awesome to me.
Some of the comments ITT remind me of the Professor from The Simpsons: “You couldn’t possibly appreciate this on as many levels as I do!”
I’m happy when I see another 4Runner driving around, regardless of generation, trim level, mods, or whatever. But it’s cool to see what people do to their vehicles. I don’t have those DIY skills yet so it’s kind of awesome to me.

I think it's always been a popular vehicle, but I do see a lot of modded 5th gens that don't ever seem to go offload. Although I think that's the same for any popular 4x4s.
I for one don’t care the more 4runners on the road the better. I am tired of all the Jeeps waving to one another and acting like they are so cool! Wave at me wave at you! Kills me! I have a 1998 Toyota 4Runner with TRD SC, 2007 FJ TRD SC, and 2019 TRD PRO 4Runner Voodoo Blue! I have Toyota in my blood and the more Toyota’s on the road the better. It is the decade of the Toyota off road monsters! Down with Jeeps! Cut off their hands...no more waving! Wait, I need to take my meds! Sorry for the rant!
