Is the 4Runner your toy or daily driver?

As you can see from my signature, I have two 4runners. Up until a year ago, I just had the '94, and it was pretty much my DD, and also my trail vehicle. But, the lack of comfort on long interstate trips, and lack of power to pull my popup, led me to add the '06. It meets all of my DD and highway needs - I love driving it - and, with the mild lift and the 32 inch tires, it also meets 90% of my offroad needs. The '94 stays around as a backup vehicle and to go out on the more gnarly local trails (and to feed my need for occasionally driving a manual).

My offroad activity is primarily a means to get to interesting and remote places, not so much to test man and machine against the terrain. If I can walk faster than I can drive a road, I generally prefer being on foot. Given that, I think the '06 4runner provides a hard-to-beat combination of onroad manners and offroad capability at the level I need.

Not sure if that was a general statement or direct towards me... but my runner is far from a mall crawler in terms of how its used... heck I dont even take it to the mall...

If you dont plan ahead how could you use your money wisely? Last thing I want to do is sink 20-30k into a project that keeps going in random direction, only to find that it doesn't really fit my wants/needs after its run its course... and with very little ROI or cost recovery.

Even changing your mind down the road is a very costly venture if you dont exercise fore-though ... moving away from a rig that has been geared, long travel, or caged is basically even more $ than starting fresh at times. Which is the reason for this thread; picking a final application, specializing for it, or just buying a better toy to start with.

If anything I am constantly growing out of its capability after I mod it... The only things that is left is truly moving into high dollar mods and leaving the world of bolt on OE gear.

For where I often use the truck... I could get away with just selling it and buying something that makes a lot more sense for the terrain I drive on BUT I love my 4Runner and want to keep at it, I just feel that its starting to become something pretty specialized.

It was not directed towards you or your truck. I was merely stating that folks often over estimate their needs, and over build. I do not know your needs, know you, know your terrain, or know your truck. I was hoping my comment might be taken as general advice.

My 4Runner is definitely our Overlanding toy. We only use it for our off-roading trips, camping, and hunting. I have a 15 Tacoma as a DD and my wife has a 13 Ford Fusion.

I think the 4Runner is a perfect toy for us. It is capable enough that it goes anywhere we want it to but drives great on the highway also. For our long type of trips the 4Runner is perfect rig.

Just bought a 5th gen for the daily grind. The 4th gen is purely a toy now and will be used pretty much for wheeling, camping trips, kayaks and visits to the beach. I just can't bring myself to sell it.
