is the chrome on the bumper paintable?

went to maaco to get a estimate. they said they wont paint my bumpers cause the chrome will make the paint drip off. they're charging me almost a thousand dollars to just paint the body. not my side mirrors or my rear hatch plus an extra 100 cause its a suv. what a rip off.

I believe chrome has to be really scuffed up for paint to adhere to it. I know guys have done it successfully, but I'm not sure if there's other prep work that must be done. I would imagine that it should be scuffed up and then shot with a primer designed to stick to metal surfaces.

Hmm? No it's simple. Take 80g sandpaper put it on a sander go over whole bumper 5mins. Paint. Mines holding up great.

There was a spot I missed and paint didn't stick so I had to go over it. I didboth front and back no primer.

You will have to really sand it to a rough finish, but even with that, the paint will peel over time.

Hmmm I hammered out a dent on the front bumper and noticed rust forming, so I put a layer of clear coat on it.
I'm not worried I need an excuse to get a new bumper.

If rust is forming, then the chrome has been penetrated and is paintable.

Go to certifit and buy the fatlip primed and the rear bumper sections primed for like $100, and you should will be able to paint those.

If you can afford to buy those certifit bumpers go for it! If not, sandblast them, or use a coarse grit sand paper like someone else mentionned. Once they've been coarsely scuffed, you can use a filler primer to fill in the scratches, and then base coat and clear coat.
