Is the Federal Gun Grab over?

With the defeat of the only measure that even remotely had a chance of substantial bipartisan support, do you think the gun grab is over?

The proposal itself was innocuous and, in my opinion, just a feel good measure. It doesn't really add any additional stipulations to existing law, at least that could not be circumvented within its own exclusions. If they can't pass that, while using victim's families to pander votes, I can't imagine they will pass anything like we've seen at the state level lately.

I keep seeing stories that "its not over" or "we will prevail", but I also saw similar quotes over the past few weeks assuring that it would pass.

I also wonder if those that have been so heavily pushing gun control lately are now wondering what the next election will bring... I know I would be concerned. :hatsoff:

I suspect we'll see something more from Obama or Feinstein. Considering Boston, they'll probably take a swing at reloading supplies.

I also suspect that they won't get much support from the moderates and centrists in their own party.

Yep... a national registry for pressure cookers and background checks on powder.

Things will also begin to heat up again with Obamacare so that might take some of the focus, although I don't expect Feinstein to ever let it go until she becomes entirely irrelevant.

I have no doubt the anti-constitutionalists will keep pushing and pushing their gun-control agenda, until all law abiding citizens are disarmed.

Of course then only the criminals will be armed.

You know, it's too bad Obama doesn't get this mad about the rest of the stuff he has to deal with that affects billions more than, say, 20-30 per incident.

He's just pissed that he didn't get his way.

but hey, it sounds good. Just like how every vehicle on the road is supposed to be insured. We know that sure as hell isn't true.

It will never be over. People will always want to have more power and control over others. It's been that way since the beginning of time.

I just have to comment on this whole situation.

-The use of Newtown Families seems a little exploitive to me. As bofa said, this is nothing more than feel-good legislation. I sympathize with the parents of those poor kids, but don't they see that background checks and gun-control laws would have made no difference in what happened? Even the Democrats themselves admit that. I think they want deeply in their hearts to feel like they did something to honor their kids and make a difference and Obama is using them to further his agenda.

-I'm also very annoyed that the president and others continue to claim they have the support of most Americans. He didn't seem to care about what most Americans wanted when they passed ObamaCare. I've noticed when things go his way, he claims "the people have spoken", when they don't he claims "politics" got in the way. Why will he not just respect that the congress/ the people have spoken?

I agree - it will never go away, just hibernate. I'm just wondering if we are finally headed to the lull that normalizes prices again and get people to focus on the real issues.

I also feel for the parents/families of the victims. My disregard for them being exploited politically has nothing to do with my sympathy for their loss. They want something done - I'm sure they are enraged - but they have been misguided and used, imo. which furthers the tragedy.

Exactly! Now it's time for the republicans to offer some solutions rather than just hoping the debate fades away. And let me get this straight....both sides agree that gun-control would not have prevented this tragedy, therefore they offer no solution. The NRA offers a possible solution of police officers/ armed teachers at schools, yet THEY are the ones that are ridiculed? How much sense does that make? Armed teachers might not be ideal, but at least they are looking for actual solutions to the problem.

For those who feel this legislation that was "shot down" (sorry--couldn't help it) was fairly innocuous and "feel-good"--well, that's the point. They want total disarmament, but they can't just toss that out there, so they start at something like this. If they get it passed, then they're emboldened to go for the next level up the line. In the end, it's all so pointless, because none of the arguments for gun control hold water--it's a power grab, plain and simple. Definitely glad this one bit the dust...but no, I don't think the libs are done with this issue (not by a long shot--oops!).

I agree.

I would support legislation that actually did something to address the real problem, which is mental illness.

Unfortunately, we could make the USA a complete Police State, and it still wouldn't stop defective people from doing terrible things. They will still find a way.

Existing gun-control laws prevented the killer from buying a gun on his own. He had to resort to stealing guns from his Mother, then used those stolen guns to kill her, then stole her car and drove to a School which was a "gun free zone", where he went on to kill defenseless adults and children. Their being defenseless was guaranteed by the fact that it was a "gun free zone".

Psychopathic killers just love those unbelievably misguided and naive "gun free zones".

Biden has announced that they will enact some executive actions later this week. RED ALERT: Biden Vows Obama Will Use Executive Orders To Further Gun Control After Senate Failure? | Weasel Zippers

And the anti-gun activists will be waiting for the next tragedy so they can once again dance in the blood of innocents.

I don't know why Obama even bothers with normal, accepted, legal, constitutional, proper attempts to get his way anymore--he's already proven that he sees himself as the emperor/king/dictator of America, and if he doesn't get his way, he just bypasses everyone and makes his own laws. How this is allowed to continue is waaaaaay beyond all logic, reason, or patriotic duty of those who have the power to impeach him.

Great to hear from the same half dozen paranoid losers on these gun threads. Keep it going. Your hair-brained commentary is priceless.

...says some loser who has nothing better to do than butt into conversations and insult people. Just because you are too much of a ***** to own, operate a gun or think freely doesn't mean you need to insult people sharing their views. Go find a thread about hair products or manpons Cheif. I'm sure I could get some great hair brained commentary going about she males who are afraid of guns, like you.

Feel free to explain how the law would have prevented the tragedy at Newtown. Or any logical argument for gun control for that matter....or are insults and name-calling the best you have to offer?

Alright fellas...let's keep the personal insults out of this. If you have a rational point to make that relates to the topic, then make it. No need to increase your post count by stirring the pot.

Carry on.

I've come to realization that no matter what, there will always be personal insults when discussing political views on a forum.
