Is the Federal Gun Grab over?

I think the thread was going great up till that point. Some people just feel like they need lash out at people who don't agree with them. Coincidentally a lot of these types are unstable people prone to violence who should not own guns and therefore feel like nobody else should have them " because they might snap"
On a lighter note , gun owners won this one , even if we are losing elsewhere. I'm not looking forward to the Connecticut gun registrations coming up in January, I feel like I have lost some freedom just by living here. My favorite toys are all banned now.On the same not i feel that backround checks are great since we wouldnt want weapons in the wrong hands. If you are a good citizen you have nothing to worry about. Some people like trucks and join a truck forum to talk to like minded people.... well we like trucks and guns. I like to modify them, clean them, test the abilities of them. You would think people would get that , or stick to threads about sports or whatever tickles their pickle, right ? Seems that the " gun nuts" I know have much more self control that the " anti gunners" who get all bent and act like children if you don't see eye to eye with them.l

I've come to realization that no matter what, there will always be personal insults when discussing political views on a forum.

I agree, I've seen this "method of arguing" on other forums. But that shouldn't be the norm. Why not strive to be better? I think you can intelligently rebut someone's argument by pointing out flaws in their logic, providing data to prove your point, etc. without resorting to a distraction tactic like personal insults/attack.

Most people who resort to childish insults usually do so because they have nothing logical to refute the other sides position with.

In all fairness, he's tried in other threads.... and failed miserably.

It seems like he got what he wanted, we got distracted from the important issue. Im glad the proposed bill was struck down, maybe the good ol boys still do run this country. It gives me hope . I don't feel like getting all deep into it right now, but I was enjoying your posts so please... carry on with the peacefull, intelligent conversation my friends. Tell it like it is and the way it should be.:thumb3:

Exactly! Now it's time for the republicans to offer some solutions rather than just hoping the debate fades away. And let me get this straight....both sides agree that gun-control would not have prevented this tragedy, therefore they offer no solution. The NRA offers a possible solution of police officers/ armed teachers at schools, yet THEY are the ones that are ridiculed? How much sense does that make? Armed teachers might not be ideal, but at least they are looking for actual solutions to the problem.

You know, that's probably the thing that has irked me the most out of all of this. We have the opportunity to make an impact. It won't prevent every tragedy but there are gaps in our current standards. Gun free zones need security. Mental Health should be taken into account when purchasing a firearm. Existing laws should be better enforced. These are things that even the strongest gun rights supporters agree with and the grabbers are too busy chasing their tails and pissing off half of their constituents.

amen!

Since you asked nicely.... Why not require a screening that is renewed annually (or every few years)? There could also be tests for certain genetic markers. And just to add a little balance, allow their personal physician to clear them if for some reason they had an issue with the screening but have no known mental deficiency.

In reality the gun industry loves Obama, he's the best gun salesman ever and is bringing the highest profits the industry has ever seen. I have all the home protection and sport guns I'll ever need and we onlyhave 3 more years to go til another politician takes the reings and this gun control situation willnever go away as long as we have public shootings.

I think a permit (with photo) to buy guns with a background check is a great idea. That way, you can present it/ask to see it when buying or selling a gun in a personal sale. Not only is it easier and more efficient than background checks with each purchase, it would prevent tracking of individual sales that some are worried about. I don't agree with the genetic thing though. That's a little too much of an invasion of privacy for my taste, and genetics are only part of the puzzle with mental illness.

100% against genetic screenings. We don't know nearly enough about what predispositions are displayed in the genetic record to use that kind of stuff intelligently, and it's a short step from there to eugenic-type policies.

I think a CCW type permit is a great way to streamline the background check process, but I don't agree that it should be required.

I think that would be a violation of privacy but would be willing to play along to keep the guns out of the wrong hands. A close look at everyone in the household over 18 would be even better if this is the route they took.My wife just got her pistol permit, an officer came to our house and sat with her in the kitchen asking questions. I think that alone is a good way to see someone's life and get an idea of their mindset, situation. At first I was pissed they wanted to come to the house but they were not nosy or rude, just wanted to get a feel for the applicant and other household members. They also realized we have children and over emphasised safe storage practices.

Totally agree. Every 3 years. Genetics and family as well. Don't like it? No guns for you.

In my opinion, the second most important thing is proper weapons storage. Just make them impossible to access by those that shouldn't have them. That alone could have made a huge difference in our most popular topic around here.

The problem with family/ genetics is practically everyone has some form of mental illness in their family. Mental illness is very poorly understood and the term itself is very broad/ vague. How sick is too sick?

On a related note, my wife and I were discussing the irony of all these cops running around MA with AR-type guns. Why is it OK for them to have one and not citizens? You're telling me that they can go through a relatively short period of training to be a LEO and all of a sudden they are worthy of having one? You're telling me that ALL cops are mentally stable and would never do anything violent of foolish with a gun? You're telling me NO cops have troubled kids/ relatives? Not trying to attack police officers here....my favorite uncle is one (retired). I just think it's a little inconsistent. And the LEOs I know personally are big-time 2nd A supporters. Though that might have to do with midwestern culture more than profession.

"The wrong hands"? According to who? If you listen to Feinstein, the "wrong hands" includes everybody but her. And two wrongs don't make a right - a federal invasion of privacy in the name of "gun control" is hardly the right way to ensure that the people are armed and capable of insurrection, don't you think?

Allow me to clarify some points of that idea...

-It will not prevent every massacre. Sandy Hook would not be prevented by this or any other proposal we've seen. This might have helped in the Aurora shooting, and maybe in some of the other school shootings.

-It would not be a free-for-all for genetic screening and I would only support it for those diseases/illnesses that are well known and well documented within the medical community. I think this is why a periodic renewal is importantly, since not all diseases are full-on from the early stages of life (think Alzheimer's). And I hope th physician's involvement would also allow them to report someone they feel is incapable of responsibly owning a gun, again with the ability to have a private physician clear them if its untrue. This is not going to be 100% fool proof anyway we slice it.

- One of the big problems now is that medical records are private thus preventing the information from being used for screening. This is a good thing in many aspects. I think the card/permit approach will help keep things private... It will be a yes/no, with no additional details aside from what you see on your CWP or license today.

- This still will not account for those that obtain guns illegally, even those with mental illness that would do so. The fact is, bad guys are going to get guns sometimes. Citizens have the right to self defense and, IMO have the obligation to embrace that right. The government has the obligation to protects its citizens. Where they fail, people take action on their own and we need to minimize that failure. Gun free zones may be necessary - but we need security for these places. It's not free, it's not convenient, and its sobering to know that school may not be a safe place. But I'd rather have a few retired marines or off-duty cops on hand than to let our children sit in a classroom like fish in a barrel.
