Is the resonator a secondary muffler?

Yeah, I thought about putting the resonator back on. Surprisingly enough, the 50 series Magnaflow made all the difference. Throaty on the gas, mellow when idling and cruising.

So what would be the downside of just cutting it off and having the exhaust exit under the frame?

can anyone answer this? my tailpipe is bent where it goes over the frame and the resonator just dangles low behind the wheel. i can't get it to line up with the clamp above, so i know it's bent. if i just unbolt and remove that section of tailpipe behind the muffler, what would the effect be? would the fumes be horrible? would it affect acceleration or MPG? halp

Take it off. I have done this on all my 4Runners. There is no drone or any anoying noises at all. At idle and open throttle it makes the V8 sound like a V8. Cut the hook off of the top of the resonator to use back on your tale pipe tip. You have to get the exhaust out from under the car either to the side or the back unless you like breathing carbon monoxide.

I'd be careful about just cutting it off, you do want the exhaust to exit the vehicle. Find a local muffler shop and see what their recommendation is, usually not that expensive to have them make sure it is routed out the vehicle and mounted correctly.

It cost me $35 for the 3" Stainless Steel tip and installation.
