Is there a need for cup holders on the 96-98?

I am changing this first post due to photobucket blocking my images in this entire thread. I didn't want folks reading through pages of info and not see any pics of the cup holders. I am attaching pics of the final designs that are now available on my website at Products | BH3D Printing and www.etsy.com/shop/bh3dprinting
There are a few options. There is a double cup holder that is available for the 4WD and 2WD auto consoles. The double will not fit on the manual console due to the 4WD shifter. I also have a single cup holder for the 2WD and 4WD auto AND a specific single cup holder for the manual tranny console. There is also a rear double cup holder available. Here are the final designs.
This is the double that will mount to the 2WD and 4WD auto console:

I guess the reason for this thread is to figure out if there actually is interest in developing a line of cup holders for the gen 3 4Runner. Here is my site dedicated to LandCruisers. Products | BH3D Printing. If there is no interest then I'm fine with moving on. I just wanted to make sure before I passed on this business opportunity.

a month or less ago a fellow designed and 3d printed cup holders for his school project iirc and wanted to know the interest in them as well. his was a very crude blocky design yet still super functional for cups that went to the right of the shifter into the passengers legs.

maybe others will chime in. ive got a 00 so no need for me, just sharing.

I have been getting flooded with emails over the last few months to make a double and single cup holder for the 96-98 4Runner. At first I ignored all of the requests because I have plenty of projects going to keep me busy. But now, it's getting close to insane with the amount of emails/requests I'm getting for designing cup holders for the early Gen 3 4Runner. I owned a 91 and 95 4Runner back in the day and HATED that useless pull out cup holder tray that blocked my stereo. I then grabbed a 93 80 series that I built for expedition then grabbed a 97 FZJ 80 for rock crawling. Finally I got myself into an 03 100 series. FINALLY got some cup holders. I guess the reason for this thread is to figure out if there actually is interest in developing a line of cup holders for the gen 3 4Runner. Here is my site dedicated to LandCruisers. I am thinking about putting a single cup holder or possibly a double (if enough space) along the the passenger side of the center console. If there is only enough room for a single cup then I might also add a slot for a phone/wallet with maybe a built in pen and flashlight holder. You can see the same concept with my front double for the 80 series. Please feel free to give suggestions on what you guys want beyond holding drinks.

I would be in for a double cup holder. Depends on how far they stick out as I always have a passenger when I drive so its important that it doesn't take too much room away. I was planning on swapping out the center console, but this would work too.

I have a buddy that has a 98 that I will be using for mock up. I will make sure the seat can have full motion front and rear and the passenger has plenty of leg room. There is definitely a lot less relestate then the 80 series but I'm confident I can make something aesthetically pleasing and functional. I will need to start finding the factory colors to match the cup holder to the center console. I will do my best to make it look "factory". Does anyone know how many center console color options there are? Any over the counter rattle can paint that is a match to any of those colors?

There are only moon mist and oak for that year range. I'm not sure of any rattle cans that match really well.

The 91-97 80 series has an "Oak" color. It's exact color match is the Rustoleum Textured Bronze. I wonder if that is the same "oak" color? Any body got pics of the Oak color on the center console? Actually a pic of the "Moom Mist" would be nice as well.

That looks a LOT like the gray that came on 80 series. I wonder is the Oak and dark gray on the 4Runners is the same as the 80? That would make my life a lot easier.

I'm pretty sure those are the same two colors that came in the 80 series. I will bring my current cup holder over to my buddies place to compare. He has the tan "oak" interior. I got a feeling it will be an exact match. I will head to the local pick a part next week to find the gray interior and see if my current gray paint is also an exact match.

Judging by the pics on your website, (especially that first pic with the double holder), even if they are not identical colors, they are close enough.

Since this isn't a Prius forum, I don't think any of us care too much about the color—we just want a good solid place to put our coffee or whatever, where we don't have to worry. Many of us have expensive stereos, tablets, radios, CB's, HAM's and phones...etc, either directly under the stock cup-holders or in the immediate vicinity.

I think a good functional cup-holder is one of the Holy Grails of the 96-98 crowd.

I am personally annoyed by my stock cup-holder every single day. Whether it's bubbling up hot coffee all over or just rattling like crazy every time I hit a bump in the road—I'm always scowling at the damn thing.

Your product looks pretty solid, especially since you offer different inserts too. As a bonus though, they do look pretty cool. I look forward to seeing the 4Runner version.

I need it because I plan to mount a tablet over the spot where my current stock cup holder is located.

That is definitely not the most aesthetically pleasing. Doesn't that block the seat from moving all the way forward? I will be trying to design something that allows full function of the seat. From my prelimenary measurements I can definitely fit a single cup holder and cell/wallet tray. Here is one a made for the 80 series. This is a really old design that I eventually discontinued. It has the cup holder and storage tray. I realized I had enough relestate on the 80 to create a full double cup holder AND allow full motion of the seat. I keep the area between the inserts open so you could still place a phone or wallet on one side and have the cup holder on the other. In this discontinued design, I put a hole in the bottom of the tray to allow for a phone charger to slide through. I might develop something like this for the gen3 to allow for full movement of the seat and then also design a full double cup holder for the folks that don't care to put the seat all the way forward. The double would still allow for good movement of the seat but not the full motion. I just don't think the 4Runner console is wide enough to allow for the full double and full seat movement. I hope I am wrong and will know soon enough.

It doesn't block the seat since it collapses neatly.

My only issue with it is I don't think it will last more than another year.

I think you would be making some serious bank if you made these for 3rd gens. Its a problem that many of us have and would fix in a heartbeat with something like this. I say do it! : )
