is there an easy way to do oil change? (V8)

I just bought 8 quarts of Amsoil Signature Synthetic 5w-30, it says its guaranteed for 25k oil changes, 15k if you do severe driving. Its amazing what they can do with oils these days...

I change my oil in the Spring and before Winter. Thats around 5000 - 6000 miles.

The cost of changing the oil compared to the cost of changing an engine doesnt compare.
It does not take that long to change it and it gives me opportunity to look at everything under there.

I use the same stuff and with their filters you can go that long. I change mine once a year which ends up being 15k-16k miles of easy driving for the most part. Ran my last truck, a Ford Ranger 4x4 to 250k with that oil and when I sold it it was burning 1 qt of oil every 2500-3k miles. Of course that is a Ford and not a Toyota.

On my 2007 V8 changing the oil is so easy now. I made two ramps from 2x12's and jack up the back with some 6 ton stands I bought from JC whitney. I also installed a Fumoto valve and while it slows the flow of oil it is so much easier and cleaner. For the oil filter I let the oil drain from the fumoto valve until its slow to stopped and then remove the filter. I have a 2 liter bottle that I cut in half to make a funnel with the bottom sealed with the bottle cap. That way any little bit of oil that does leak gets contained. I use a tube connected to the fumoto valve that drains directly into my disposal can. I dont bother with the oil pans now that I have the fumoto valve.

Like the others said the skid plate isnt a big deal. I raise the rear of my 4runner just to level it so I can check the oil level while its in the air. I was a little leary of the plastic ramps after reading some of them failed. A stack of 2x 12's cant fail but is heavy. The weight keeps them from sliding though. Ive thought about rebuilding them with some pockets inside to cut down on the weight and add a rubber strip to the bottom for the traction. I can make a drawing if you want the "plans".

The 6 ton jack stands were used for the height they provide and for some peace of mind. I can still use them and the ramps on my wifes Mazda Protege too.

I also use the mobil 1 5W-30 and so far so good. At 5000 miles mine is dark so im happy with that interval. I plan to keep this 4runner for a long time so I dont mind changing the oil more often to keep the engine happier. I thought about sending a sample to blackstone but haven't yet.

I never had any luck with ramps of any kind, they scoot when you try to drive up on them.
Must admit that I did solve it at one of my garages with some concrete anchors and metal brackets to keep the ramps still. But that fix left stuff sticking out of the floor

My 4runner is AWD so that may contribute to why it doesnt puch them but my wifes protege doesnt push them either. Something i do is start with the ramps butted against the front of the tire as well so maybe that helps too. A strip of soft rubber should help prevent the sliding as well. The jack stands I bought from JC whitney didnt cost much so you could just use those for a stationary option. I dont know if its just me being careful but when i jack up my wifes car to put on my stands I do it in steps if I want it high. So ill jack up the front and put on those two stands then do the back and after that keep alternating to go up higher. It just helps me keep some peace of mind it isnt trying to somehow tip.

Install one of these, you wont get a drop of oil on your hands and you won't need jacks or ramps. Of course I have a v6 with the filter on top. Not that Im scared of oil or anything, its just nice not having to take off the skids.

it is EASY!!!

Just did my first oil change on my recently purchased 06 V8 sport, I was a bit scared of all the posts about how difficult it is...BUT DANG...its super easy. Yes just 4 12mm bolts and the skid plate is off in no time, giving very easy access to the oil filter with lots of room to remove and re-install it. You can get both hands on it or whatever filter wrenches you like. The drain bolt, again very easy to access. Sure the V6 has the best filter placement of all time, but this V8 is really not bad at all!

My advice is while taking off the skid plate replace those cheap ass factory self tapping bolts with some grade 8 bolts. Less chance of snapping the head off the bolt next time you remove them
