Is this a good set up for my 99 2WD 4runner?

I'm not sure where to post this but I thought it would be okay in the 3rd gen forum. My apologies if I'm incorrect.

I'm kicking around ideas for a build on my 99 Limited 2wd. I'm going to throw this out there and feel free to give me some advise or point out flaws as necessary. The 99 is my daily driver. I just want a nice height for looks. I don't off-road and I only drive around 16 miles to work round trip per day. I'm on a very limited budget and I will buy everything as I can afford it. Most likely through Amazon with my store card. :)

This is my plan for the lift and tires:

Toytec/Eibach front coil lift springs (3" lift)
Bilstein 5100 Series Shock Kit for Toyota Tacoma 4WD & Pre Runner 2005-14 - Includes Front Ride Height Adjustable Shocks # 24-239370 & Rear Shocks # 24-186728
ARB 2891 Old Man Emu Coil Spring
Toytec 2" body lift (not on Amazon)
set of 255/85/16 mud terrain tires.

Definitely don't go for M/T's since it's a street queen, an all terrain will last twice as long on the road.
 
You can cheap out more on the lift since it won't be functional. I know tons of guys that run spacers just for the lifted look and it's not good for your suspension, but hey it's not like it matters. Like UF said don't go with a MT go with a C rated AT it won't kill your mileage and it'll last longer. I'd stay away from Toyos too, they're awesome but really heavy.
 
I agree with what has been said. I think that the MTs would be overkill. As for the lift, I have had both 2" spacers and now OME 883s with 5100s. I will say that the ride quality with the OME 883s is much better than the original suspension with the spacers. Hope this helps and can't wait to see what you decide.
 
I really appreciate the feed back. It looks like all terrains instead of mud terrains and I'll be good to go.

I plan to lift my 2wd soon too. I'll go with something decent and avoid the spacer thing. I'll drive it in the woods come hunting season, and it'll look cool, so that's two solid reasons lol. I'll also be adding a front bumper and winch so the front will need a boost anyways. I hope to see an update on yours soon!
 
What's the point of any aggressive tires when you don't off road? Just get some upsized P-rated All-seasons.
 
[MENTION=71030]T4R2014[/MENTION] Becuase they look cool and you get to complain about how your "rig" gets horrible gas mileage. Tons of people do it, but mostly just to crappy Z71s and F-150s. None of them have seen dirt.
 
2WD, Long Travel, a supercharger, and a manual transmission could be a heck of alot of fun out in the open areas. Other than that, I have no idea why you'd lift a 2wd. Just seems silly.
 
I like the way it looks. I don't like my 4runner being stock like the others. It's paid for and I want to personalize it. Why do you guys hate on 2wd so much?
 
Bunch of dicks on here, big deal if he doesn't offroad. Most people lift it and don't offroad, and majority of people I see hating on 2WDs are people who pretend that hitting a dirt patch twice a month is hardcore wheeling.

I ran that exact setup minus the body lift for a long time and really liked it. Imo if you're gonna change the suspension may as well get a nicer ride, which over the previous spacer lift I had was a night and day difference. I would recommend the 890s or a different spring over the 891s, even heavily loaded I didn't find they performed well nor had the correct spring rate for the shock valving. If you like the look of MTs I would get them, though as other people said just be aware they will wear faster due to the more aggressive tread. Honestly they'll still last you quite awhile I would think; if you're doing city driving and you don't have too long of a commute anyways, so I wouldn't sweat the mileage difference (and MTs do look bad ass compared to 98% of ATs).

I bought the Eibachs from Toytec, the Bilsteins from Downsouth Motorsports and the OME891s also from Toytec. I still have the 891s and they honestly haven't held up well over time, though I pushed them pretty well--food for thought.

5100's/Eibach are mediocre for street quality. I'd prefer something with a little more compliance so I could rail on it around town.

Oh boy, my pants are so tight just thinking about it!
 
Personally, I'm a 2WD hater and think it's stupid to get one. However, I live in Eastern WA, we see a lot of snow and rear wheel drive/2WD sucks terribly bad here and I think getting chains on a truck is stupid (unless you're doing some crazy ass offroading in the mountains). However, living in Houston is a whole different story, I wouldn't mind picking up a 2WD in Texas because there's not a lot of need for 4WD. Plus, if someone likes a lift, get it! Who cares if you're not planning on rock crawling or some crazy offroading. I'm sure when hunting season comes around, there will be times when OP will be happy he got the real lift (as opposed to a body lift), if that's what he decides to get.

Too each their own...
 
way I see it, a lift looks good, but, better components can also mean a better ride- win/win. around here, in flat-a## Florida, there is no "wheeling", theres fire roads and mud. Tons of the enormous 4wd pickup guys, handily use their 4wd to get.....more stuck. With 2wd, I'll get stuck before I have to get my feet too muddy:lol:

I'm gonna have to side with Absalom here. If it wasn't for wheeling I'd want the looks and the comfort. I'm sure you could get more comfortable than this set up, but it'll probably cost more, and be more work to set up. 4Runner's with mild lifts are really really good looking I think. I have ~3" lift set-up right now, and I would actually like to go lower for looks if I could stand losing some approach/departure/break-over clearance. But I don't wanna lose clearance!
 
I saw your question in a 4th gen thread and posted a reply over there, but I'll copy it here just to make sure you see it. And I know where you're coming from. I don't need 4wd, and I don't want my 4Runner to look just like all the other 4Runners out there. Here are my thoughts.

Toytec Eibach front springs - SUUUPER stiff!
Bilstein 5100s for Tacomas - SUUUPER soft!
Those two together, not a good combination. Do yourself a favor and save up for the Tundra Bilsteins and Tundra TRD springs (PM me if you need me to dig up a part number). It looks like some have advised against the Eibachs, but I'd say stay away from the Tacoma Bilsteins as well.

891 rear springs would be a good choice to pair with tundra TRD fronts, although I never had them. You may or may not want a body lift with this setup. I had 906s with mine and had 1/2" reverse rake. I thought 906s with 1.5" rear spacer would've been perfect. I was worried about them being too stiff, but that wasn't the case. Do a search for Speedy TRD lift. He did a great write up on the install and has pics to show the stance.

If you're getting a 2" BL, consider the '99 tall springs for a cheaper route. My 3rd gen build thread has pics with this set up and no BL. I think '99 talls with either a BL or a spacer lift would look great too. From what I've read, spacers are bad if you're articulating your suspension to the max. If it's just for looks, shouldn't be a problem.

I'm happy to help with install if you need it. I switched out the suspension on my '02 about 4 times.

One thing that I have neglected to add is that I plan on putting this beast of a bumper on the front: ARB 3423020 Winch Compatible Bull Bar

I will need to compensate for the weight. I want height and comfort. I just want my rig to look good and enjoy driving it.
