i mean is this a bad thing , how do i change that... So sorry for posting this here. I orginally had it in the general discusions and i out of 140 something people only one person replied. So... im hoping i can get some more info here

So i was doing my annual "check under the hood and do some cleaning day" the other night and was shocked when i saw that one of my battery caps was off and just laying to the side, I know that it couldn't have come off without someone taking it off so my thought was the oil change i had at the stealership about a month ago. ( they do their thing to check the battery) but there was no sign of any acid leaked anywhere but i looked inside the battery and it looked dry from what i can see, Could this be a problem?
If it helps i have a duralast (the red one) and everything still works great, she fires right up, I'm just kind of concerned about when it starts getting cold, i don't wanna be the noob stuck in snow begging for a jump

Yes if the cell is dry it is a bad thing. The level needs to be above the top of the plate and usually to the bottom of the fill hole. a dry cell soon becomes a dead cell.
 
doh!! :ybrick: fricken dealership, so it can still work even though its dry? i just may have to go in and make them give me a new one...
 
It will still work but I wouldn't trust it. Sounds to me like the stealership checked a sealed battery by removing a cap and not replacing it. Regardless if they did it, if you went in to get your oil changed and in the report it said "battery was good" they clearly missed something. I have never heard of any reports of those caps just coming off.

thanks guys for one for the helpful info and two, for making me almost piss myself :lmao: that was hilarious! but yeah i just went and got some distilled water and filled it where you said Wrexhamm hopefully that soves it! Im pretty sure it was the dealership cause i never really have a need to check anything under the hood it's a fricken toyota! you just dont need to do that so often im glad i got it before it was too late!
 
you should go to a shucks or autozone and make them do a float test on that cell to see if it's dead, topping it up with water may be the fix but it may already be broken past that point. you can typically have 1 dead cell on a battery and be ok but if you really need to rely on the battery and have no problems i would check this out and possibly replace.

do a search and read about testing your batteries with a hydrometer.
 
yeah thats probably a good idea. ill stop by autozone tonight, my concern now is, say it is bad, i think i still have a warranty on it, i cant remember how long it was for though, so im hesitant to tell them what happened in case that voids the warranty or something, then ill have to rely on the dealership to hopefull give me a new battery and who knows if they'll do that!

yeah just top it up with water, they can't prove why the cell is dead, as far as i know short of chopping the battery up and running some pretty heavy chem analysis on it they won't be able to tell what happened, i don;t see any problems, just tell them you took it to autozone and they said you had a dead cell and you want a refund or new battery, it should be good to go.

i originally thought this thread was about caNADians suv's or the NAD's as we call Canadians here in Wa, lol
 
haha yeah sorry for the typo i'm not sure how to fix it. bue Thanks for that info though gosh these days companies are doing everything they can to save a buck.

thats true, i smile every time i see the "nad thing" now, all i can think of that squirl haha.
i went in and got the battery checked and everything is good! i was pretty surprised consitering that vent cap was off for at least a month. Amazing!

just to check, you made them do a float test right?, as you can still have a dead cell and have the battery test ok with a volt meter, most batteries have 6 cells so if you have a dead one the other 5 can still put out enough current to test as ok, just an fyi.

if so glad everything worked out for you man!
 
thanks for the heads up, thats probably a good idea, They just hooked it to one of their volt meter things. to where it said it was good. I wasn't completly satsified with that. maybe ill bring it in to the delaership and make them do it. I really dont want to be screwed when it starts getting cold.
