Is this e-locker housing a good deal?

Is this e-locker housing a good deal?

third gen 4runner elocker differential housing

I have an open diff 4.1 so I presume I'd need a new third member with 4.3? But then I'd have to change the gearing in the front to match right?

Or can I modify my 4.1 3rd member to take the e-locker?

This seems a little steep just for the housing.

If you were going to spend that kind of money, I would be leaning more towards a new ARB Air Locker combined with a CKMTA12 - ARB twin compressor to save around $500 AND have on board air for tires. Granted, I don't have either, but I would either wait to find a great deal on an e-locker complete, or shell out some big money and get an ARB.

If you're interested in spending that kind of money, just buy an ARB locker, then you'll have money left over for some RCV axles from us at Northwest Trail Innovations :thumb3:

Good god man!

I just picked up a complete drum to drum elocker axle, w/ the factory dash button, wiring harness, and the computer for the axle for 600 bucks.

 Am I reading that right? $800 for the housing and nearly $1000 for the diff? That's nuts.

I bought my elocker housing for $100, granted I had to wire wheel and paint it. I waited 3 or 4 months to find an elocker diff with 4.10's, but that was only $400. Got a factory switch and ECU for $40. I'm only $540 in for everything.

EDIT: Even in Canadian dollars that is just too steep. My prices above are all US dollar. If I were you I wouldn't pay more than $800 Canadian for BOTH the housing and diff together.

HELL NO IT AINT GOOD. That dude is nuts. I got whole truck for $750 with the locker. And don't forget the front diff as most likely your original gears are different. If you willing to spend that much. Get ARB. Or continue looking

Personal opinion....$800 for a complete housing with locker seems a lot more the norm.... around here anyway.

Canada may be completely different though....I know rust issues eat up a lot of parts there so ones that don't have cancer are going to be worth more....but that just seems too steep to me.

Things are worth whatever someone is willing to pay though....

With the e-locker? I need to go to Texas with a trailer then. :)

That's about what they cost. Have to find them though. I like the grizzly locker in mine for the money, but it does chirp tires a little around corners if you are on the power.

I hear ya....after running ARBs and the elocker for 20 years....I have found I prefer the automatics....which is why from now on, I'm going Grizzly where I can....ended up having to do a Detroit for the rear Tundra axle as no Grizzly was available for the misnamed "8.4".

I'd prefer an manual as well. I'm planning a toyota e locker or arb for my 100 series. It's a lot nicer truck and I don't want to change the way it drives.

The bigger the tire, the less you even notice it.....*caveat* on non-icy pavement.

Maybe I'll try to put together a road trip to Mexico in Jan and swing by somewhere down south to do the switch...

I haven't been there yet, would be an interesting place to wander around.

to bad its so far to ship to NYC from British Columbia what would that cost a fortune for front and rear they quoted only 295 their money plus shipping :confused:what would that cost

IMHO the E-Locker swap is worth it. Save your money, buy just the E-locker 3rd member, Buy the E locker gasket from Lowrangeoffroad, buy their wiring harness, and custom retrofit an E-Locker with your housing. WAY less expensive than an ARB and to me it is more reliable. No air hoses, no compressor to worry about, just have a dedicated OBA setup for tools.

From what I've seen (and I think Slee even mentions it)....the ARB is more reliable than the Elocker when you start running harder trails with bigger tires.

Yes, the ARB is more complex due to the compressor and air supply issues...but an air switch greatly simplifies things over the switches ARB supplies with the locker and a modest set of orings and SS braided lines go a long way to staving off any common ARB problems.

Personally, I wouldn't hesitate to run a Zip locker either...I'd probably get a comp model (default is locked)....though on a DD, that is probably not a great idea but for a trail rig it would be.

Pretty sure I know the guy who is selling it. He is over priced on everything he sells, especially its it Toyota related. You can try barganing with him, but I have a feeling he's not going to budge much. Toyota stuff in this area is at a premuim price right now. There are 3rd gen 4runners listed for $15k and over.

In an application like SAS'd rigs or dedicated crawlers, I believe that which you stated. However, the simplicity, economic feasibility, and reliability of a Toyota E-Locker has proven to be bar none. It is, for the most part, true that an E-Locker is more $$ friendly. It is safe, and OEM. I think we all appreciate completing a mod with OEM precision and reliability.
