Is this e-locker housing a good deal?

I am also a Vancouver resident and I managed to find my drum to drum 4.10 elocker housing WITH the elocker third member and all of the factory wiring, switch and ECU for $500.

Yes, it was in fairly rough shape when I got it. I wire wheeled and repainted it and also had to rebuild the actuator but the only real cost for this was my time and I learned a lot about how the elocker works and behaves which is of value in itself.

I now have a factory quality Elocker install with a working dash light and all for not much more than the cost of a cheap auto locker.

That stuff you posted is definitely overpriced!

In an application like SAS'd rigs or dedicated crawlers, I believe that which you stated. However, the simplicity, economic feasibility, and reliability of a Toyota E-Locker has proven to be bar none. It is, for the most part, true that an E-Locker is more $$ friendly. It is safe, and OEM. I think we all appreciate completing a mod with OEM precision and reliability.

Oh I agree 100%.....Toyota's OEM elocker is the best one out there out of all the manufacturers, IMO. The actuator assembly is a little exposed, but otherwise, it's a great option....best money you can spend IMO.

Paid $275 for Tacoma E locker complete axle. Got the wiring coming off the housing but not the other. I didnt get the ECU. I already have an E locker in my 3rd gen but for the price I couldn't pass it up. Might go in my 1st gen 4Runner or I will sell it for a profit to a Tacoma guy.

I'm going to drive down the west coast from Vancouver to Mexico in a month and a half, and then back. I was thinking this would be a good chance to pick up a rear axle with e-locker but I don't know how to find them. Searched Craigslist LA and Seattle, nothing. Is there somewhere else to look?

Also, mine is currently 4.1 and I think I should change to 4.3 unless I can find a 4.1 e-locker which is doubtful. This means I'll have to change the front to 4.3. Is this difficult?

I found this one for a Tacoma in the Bay area, 4.1 even, is it the same as the 4runner?

https://sfbay.craigslist.org/nby/pts/5843295713.html

Edit: I guess I should do some better searching first before asking questions. the Tacoma leaf springs aren't compatible with the 4runner.

I found this site, car-part.com that has a bunch listed.

third gen 4runner elocker differential housing

I have an open diff 4.1 so I presume I'd need a new third member with 4.3? But then I'd have to change the gearing in the front to match right?

Or can I modify my 4.1 3rd member to take the e-locker?

This seems a little steep just for the housing.

If you want e locker you need the e Locker carrier, as for the housing, if you can weld drill and tap you can modify a non locked housing to accept the locker. And yes the front and rear ratios need to match, you can transfer your gear set into a locker carrier, but if larger tires are your poison should probably match the front gear to the new rear.

4.1 elockers would likely be in a manual with the 3.4L and 265 tire option...JFYI.

I posted a thread about a $100 or $125 elcoker housing for sale here in AZ with shafts this week.....again, JFYI.

Thread resurrection, I bought an elocker with housing out of a 1999 4runner limited I pulled out of a junk yard for 130 bucks.

Personal opinion....$800 for a complete housing with locker seems a lot more the norm.... around here anyway.

Canada may be completely different though....I know rust issues eat up a lot of parts there so ones that don't have cancer are going to be worth more....but that just seems too steep to me.

Things are worth whatever someone is willing to pay though....

The housings rust out in the salt states so if I call my salvage yard and he has a good one or can locate a good one locally we're usually at $600-$900 maybe a little more for a locker or a really clean one. If it's gotta be shipped from the southwest or somewhere far away even though the price may be cheaper due to more rust free availability the freight will make it the same or more. No matter what though, $2000 for a 20 year old axle is too much! Keep looking.

Yeah I picked a whole axle up in Oregon for $500.

Then I happened to be at the local wrecker as they were dismantling a pristine 97 for immediate crushing and got that one for $250 I think. They had no idea what the truck was worth that they were crushing Both are 4.3 elocker complete rear ends, rust free.

Can anyone 100% confirm that a 4.10 e-locker third member pulled from a 1996-2003 Tacoma will fit into a 4Runner factory e-locker housing without modification? Straight drop-in?

Ye, it will fit. I just installed a Tacoma 4.10 elocker 3rd member in my 4runner elocker housing recently. No issues.

Last year runner showed up at PAP with locker $140.00 gone before I could get there with tools, ha.
Later in year found one drum to drum with control arms sway bar electrical harness etc $700. Regeared refurbed it ready to go in,
Had regeared front diff laying around, put Harrop E-locker in it, will be dual locked this month.

I got a housing I would sell for 150, picked up here
that would be easier and faster than modifying a stock one, plus when you drill and tap you have to be right on the money.
it had 430 gears, but blew the pinion gear, you can have that too if you want
but its not in it , just next to it, I wanted to open it up and see what blew
