Is this factory?

So I'm getting ready to replace what I believe to be the factory in my 86 but I'm honestly curious if this is actually the factory radio or not. On crutchfield it asks about a radio with a pocket below or not, so I'm trying to figure out which option I should choose lol.

Pretty sure that's not factory. Every stock one that I have seen has the cubby below however this is a mod I see a lot here. People use double din radios and delete the cubby. I believe any double din radio should fit in there nicely. Maybe put ya a TV/radio there.

Some SR5 models did come with a double din radio/cassette, but I've never seen one like yours pictured above. Mine has the factory one and it has a goofy equalizer built into it.

double din radios were used in many of the 1st gens. different options available. some did reportedly have equalizers. mine was just a tape deck and radio, but was double din. i replaced it with a same-period (but not offered in the runner) double din radio/tape/cd player.

I'm not sure but that is pretty cool! What are you going to do with it when you pull it? I'd be interested in it if you're willing to part with it.

Interesting, thanks for the info guys! :D Looks like I'll be looking for a double-din if I can find one I can afford lol Otherwise I'll have to look for little cubby hole options.
lofreqjeff - I don't have any plans for it so if you want it when I pull it out it's all yours if you want to pay for shipping on it. It's not in 100% working order. Tape deck doesn't work, the volume pot is scratchy and it's missing the knob for the 10k eq adjustment. It does work as an FM radio though, I haven't tried switching between AM/FM so I have no idea if that button works lol

I can probably get all that to work - maybe I can find a knob for it too.

I would love to have it, I'll gladly pay shipping and a little something extra for your troubles. I can do PayPal if you use that.

i used to have a factory radio that looked similar. it came out of an 86 runner. i'll have to look and see if I still have it..

I bet it's factory. It's a bit different than the one I took out of my 87 but same brand. You can either go double or single din with the factory brackets. I added the 'pocket' below the single din player.

A friend of mine had an '86 4Runner in '86, that came with that head unit. It's even pictured in the Brochure for that year.
