When going down a long hill at say 50+ mph, if I put on the brakes the 4runner downshifts to a lower gear, which seems to make sense and help the braking, but I've never had a vehicle that did this before. Could be because this is my first 5 speed automatic. Any of you other 4th generation V8 5 speed owners notice the samething? If I'm going slower where I would be in a lower gear like 3rd or 4th, I don't notice any downshifting, only at higher speeds when I know I'm in 5th. With all this electronic control of everything it is hard to know what is normal and what is not normal. I know I have another 55K miles of warranty to figure it out but thought you guys would know. Glad to hear it's normal. Thought it was, but like I said, I've never had a 5 speed with this much computer control and drive by wire, with traction this and anti spin that. It should save some brake pads, which is fine as long as it does not wear out the transmission

Moreover it can expect the winding roads by detecting the turning condition of the vehicle. The engine control module keeps unnecessary shifting up from the fourth gear from operating and carries out the automatic shifting down to the third gear in order to control the vehicle running according to the road conditions. The engine control module also reads the driver's intentions during driving from his (her) accelerating operation and the running conditions of the vehicle. As a result of that, ideal shifting patterns [heh, in the manual it says patters] for each driver ar automatically selected without any switching operations.

A very annoying trait of the transmission. I have this certain road i must travel on and it goes downhill right before a light. It bugs me to death. Pitbull you and I seem to have the same type of thinking on our cars! I removed the annoying chirp when you lock/unlock the doors last night, one more annoying thing thats history.
