Hey fellas Ive been reading what possible combination's are possible concering the 4runner when it comes to offroading capabilities. From what Ive read, Multi mode first appeared in ALL 4Runner limited MY 1999-2000, and then trac/vsc became available on all 4runner models 01-02. But again they discontinued the rear locker after MY2000.

So what Im asking is, is it possible to have a 4runner with multi mode, rear locker, and trac? If so what years was this available in?

When years did trac/vsc start appearing? Thanks guys.

No, with one exception. ATRAC was in 2001 and up models. This was also when Toyota incorporated 4-channel ABS so that ATRAC and VSC could work (thus allowing the ECU to control each wheel independently). Prior to 2001, ABS was a 3-channel affair.

With ATRAC, Toyota discontinued the rear locker option...because it was not needed by the average 4runner owner. So, there has NEVER been ATRAC + multimode + rear locker combination until 2009 4runner Trail Edition. 2009 4runner TE will forever be unique for having this combination. (2010 5th gen 4runner Trail Edition does not have multi-mode.)

thanks Thai! If I remember correctly you said that the atrac in all 4runners was not as aggressive as the FJC correct? unless it was the 09 TE?

Right. A-TRAC in the FJ (and 2009 Trail Edition) is a special version that ONLY works in 4-LO...it is purely an off-road tool (like a locker). ATRAC (without the hyphen) is an all-terrain/all-season traction control that works in 4-Hi, 4-Lo, and on the highway. It is tuned to be less aggressive because it has to work over all sorts of terrain and at all speeds.

In the FJ or 4runner TE, if you're not in 4-LO, then you are using ATRAC (no hyphen), not A-TRAC.

Now that's not to say you can't add an ARB locker to an '01 or '02 4Runner, because you can.

However, as Thai said, a factory locker was not an option in '01 or '02 4Runners.

thanks again fellas, I never knew about that hyphen thing either.

Holy dead thread batman!

So has anyone ever swapped in the factory locker into a 01/02 and wired it to work with the center diff switch?

I figured swapping in the locker and making it lock when the center diff switch is enabled would be quite simple (assuming you could forego the locker ECU/wiring).
