Is this situation Hill Assist?

I have a 06 4WD sport 4R and have had a strange situation happen a couple of times now backing of my driveway.

I have a level driveway, but the street is on a hill.

When I have backed out and have put my foot on the brake and start to move the tranny from R to D. I will get a clicking noise and the slip indicator will show. The clicking noise is electronic and loud enough to catch my attention.

After a few seconds this all stops and everything is fine. What is strange is that is doesn't happen everytime I back out, only about 15% of the time.

I have read the manual but it's not very clear IMO.

Appreciate any ideas.

That's what it sounds like. Make sure you come to a complete stop before selecting drive.

and I agree X3 as i have personally had this situation happen to me. Really worried my wife the first time, I thought she was telling me a crazy story till it happened to me. trip to the dealer and they explained to me what it was doing. Taking the advice of coming to complete stops has really helped with the situation.

4Runners go crazy if they detect the slightest rearward motion when the transmission is in drive. On a steep incline, it can happen even if you're at dead stop when shifting from reverse to drive. Toyota has some problems with their electronic control systems, especially when it comes to their transmissions.

I just hate all that electronic usless crap. I've never had it happen to me and I'm always one who is flying backwards while shifting into drive.....I know not good but a bad habbit of always being rushed.

I found that ALL the safety features (electronic nannies) on the 4Runner really make the 4Runner one of the safest vehicles I have ever had. They are a little sensitive but in no way hinder the vehicle. I did notice on the Lexus vehicle they have incorporated a head nanny to keep all the nannies in line (VDIM) and keeps them working smoothly together.

The only safety feature I really like is the electronic brake force distribution. Most of what VSC does is purely an annoyance to me.

I don't mind having it at all just wish you could turn it off. I agree with Koz , it does stay in control and is a safe vehicle.

One thing I have noticed in rain and snow this vehicle has the best traction overall of any that I've had . Probably because of the full time 4x4. I never thought I wwould like a full time 4x4 vehicle but now I love it.
