Is this the correct grease for drive shaft?

I got a grease gun and some Valvoline DuraBlend grease at PepBoys and wanted to know from the experts if it's the proper grease to use on the propeller shaft grease fittings( U-joints, sliding yoke, double cardan joint)Valvoline DuraBlend Thanks for your comments.:hello:

yeah, that's what i use on mine (all fittings). i've posted on other threads, and that is what some others have used as well. anyone else out there with suggestions?

Looks fine to me, I use Mobil 1 syn grease in the U-joints and just lithium moly(blah blah) in the slip joint. Looks like this one can do both.

It should work just fine.

I normally lube my driveshafts every 10k miles, sometimes more if I did a lot of offroading.

If you have the driveline thump, you might want to lube the slip yokes like every 2500 miles till it is completely gone. It is better to apply less grease to the slip yokes more fequently, than too much at once.

On the U-Joints I normally pump it till I see the old grease coming out, and wipe off the excess grease. It still is a bit messy once I drive, but I'll rather have my undercarriage have a little grease on it than have my U-Joints fail sooner.

At least my thump is completely gone for a long time now.

I greased the entire drive shaft today, however I found there were two of them or one and splits in two. In total there were four u joints and two slip yokes that needed grease. The u-joints fille pretty much with four or five pumps. I heard the distinctive noise and stopped. When I was doing the slip yokes I never heard the sound that the u-joints made but the pressure on the grease gun in creased so I stoppped. I don't know If I should have put more grease, they seemed dry though.

The u-joints you wil start hearing a "farting" type sound (sorry best description I can think of now) this is basically as the old grease and air/water/etc gets pumped out. i normally keep going till i see the fresh grease coming out and then wipe off all the stuff from the U -joint. On the slip yokes, they take a lot of grease, but you can rather give a few more pumps in a few 1000 miles again. DOnt overfill the yokes as they need to compress and expand. Just grease them often till the thump is gone.

Thanks for your help and advice. It was easier than I thought, and it gives me a lot of satisfaction knowing that it was done properly. Have a great week!

I drove to work today and I didn't feel it. I'll get into the routine of greasing them every other oil change. Is not hard to do at all! I don't even have to put the truck on stands. Did your thump go away?

yeah, my 4r's thump has been gone for so long I can't even remember exactly when anymore.

It did come back after the first lube( but way softer), but not after the second.

I just bought a Lincoln grease gun for $25 from Pepboys. I also picked up some Mobil 1 grease for u-joints, etc.

I thought the price for the grease gun was good for a local store.

Besides the drive shaft, what else can be greased with the same kind of grease. I noticed the brake calipers had the same kind of grease fittings as the u-joints. I want to make sure that I grease everything that needs to be greased. It's amazing how dealers make a booklet with maintenance intervals so that they can make money when you bring your car for service.

Um... I don't think you want to grease your brakes.:awais:

The fittings on your brakes are for bleeding your brakes. Excess brake fluid comes out of those nipples when you loosen the nut.

Well it will improve your gas mileage by 100% :D

Seriously, stay away from your brake system with any oil products.

I dont think there are any grease points on the 4th Gen apart from the driveshafts. The 2WDs have none.

Good, thanks again for the info. How often do you grease your 4runner? I don't do any off road driving although New York City can be considered off road, the roads here have a lot of holes!!!

I only have 4300 miles on my 4runner. I drive in the city a lot too and it really is like off-roading on some streets. I just got my grease gun and will probably lube the driveshafts this weekend if I have time.

At least on the 1st gens, you use moly grease in the upper/lower IFS ball joints. There's no zerk. Rather it's a hex bolt you remove. You shouldn't pump it 100% full of grease (or that might cause leaking). I just feel the rubber boot to ensure there's sufficient grease in there. I did replace the hex bolts w/ 90 deg angle zerks for ease of lubing, but am careful only to lube 2-3 pumps.

I originally used Valvoline moly for both driveshafts and wheel bearings. Now that I have two Lincoln grease guns, I use Amsoil red (MP) for the rear driveshaft and U-joints and wheel bearings, Amsoil purple (moly) for the front driveshaft double cardan, ball joints, and rear shackles (OME shackles). Those driveshafts are tougher than you think. You can easily go 30+K mi if you don't drive through water.

I didn't know the slip joints on 4th gens use moly. Personally, I think if you use moly everywhere (I used it in the wheel bearings w/ no issues), you're probably OK.
