IS THIS TOO MUCH RUST ? Opinions needed

How many miles? Mine has 203000 and I've been working on wore wheeling the frame and using por frame treatment on it. My frame looks like that but my axel is way worse. I don't think that looks to bad. Any holes in the frame above the control arm mounts?

Yes like I said my pumpkin might last me two more years. If you have the will to I would pick it up and in your free time wire wheel the loose stuff off and use some paint to cover it up and then use a frame treatment to keep it good. That's what I'm doing on mine.

Not bad though it does look like the rear brake line has been replaced at some point.

Check front of the frame too near the first cross member on the side closer to the CAT.

I have been using this stuff for at least the last 15 years. Wire brush the loose rust off and brush or spray this stuff on.... it's the consistency of white milk and instantly etches into the rust and turns black. you can paint over it if you want but don't have to in areas that don't get sun.
When we lived in PA i used to paint half a rusty metal fence post and leave it for years and the painted part rust never came back.
Expensive and i've had the same gallon for all that time..... this stuff spreads very far. I even tried it on rusted quarter panels and it stopped the rust.
Do not remove the rust as it's needed for this product to work correctly
..... Your truck doesn't look all that bad and i highly recommend this stuff over just paint

I haven't tried this yet with white vinegar but it looks very interesting. skip to about the middle to save all his talking and see the reaction

I didn't think it looked too bad either. I was just trying to get some more opinions from some more experienced forum members. I appreciate all the replies. I really think the truck will last for many more years. It is a Thundercloud Sport Edition and the body and interior is in excellent condition.

On face value, it doesn't look that bad at all. Mine is/was a lot worse although I am in the process of grinding all of the rust off and using rust reformer and paining it. What I have found is although mine looks terrible, once you hit it with a grinder you realize that the rust is just on the surface. I am about 80% done on the entire vehicle and have total confidence that it will last for many, many years to come.
Every year I'll go back under and clean up any new areas or areas that need to be redone. Find the worst area and give it a good whack with a hammer, you'll know right away if its solid or if it's rotted out. Based on your pictures though, it should be fine just get it addressed.

Just try and take a wire wheel to it and take off as much as you can and then paint over it. Itll look brand new! You'll never have to think about it or look at it again. I did it and I definitely recommend it! It's worth it if you care about your t4r.

Looking at buying this ‘01 4Runner...super low miles - 46k to be more precise....so I’m paying a premium and would love the advice of you experts on the amount of rust...would this cause you any hesitation to purchase? I know it’s not that much compared to a car that’s lived in the north for years....but still curious what you all think? Thanks so much - hope to be a new owner soon and contribute more to the forum!

I know rust is relative, but from someone from the rust belt, that looks like a fricken brand new truck underneath. I'd take that and run.

Awesome, thanks for your feedback - any opinions from those of you in the “south”?
It has also been sitting (in a garage) for several years not driven, however, it was just taken to Toyota and had all fluids replaced and every maintenance item needed was done (TB, WP, spark plugs, diff, etc...).....this and the “rust” are my only two potential hesitations. Would the fact that it sat for awhile give any of you heartburn?
