Is Toyota Safety Sense reliable?

I've always loved our '99 4R for it's LACK of technology that can get screwed up. But I'm not a Luddite either and might be willing to look at a 4Runner with Safety Sense, since this may be the last SUV we buy. Any thoughts on reliability? Last think I want is some computer code that screws up the vehicle, costing money to fix.

I have a 2020. With my experience I have only had audio alerts when it went off but never has it brake for me… that’s because I have it set to the lowest invasive setting. I’m already applying the brake myself when some DUmbass cuts me off and triggers it. I also feel that the truck will function no problem even if the TSS is impaired in anyway… whenever I have frost covering the radar or camera it disables the camera/radar until the frost melts off. Based on that it seems the TSS system will disable itself if it cannot function as intended and your truck will drive just fine as if it never had the system in the first place. I have never had anything odd happen in the 2 years I have had it. My truck is wheeled regularly and even with that jostling around and abuse it hasn’t made my TSS go crazy haywire or anything. I trust these electronics that were assembled in Japan.

Same for me. Audio alert and “BRAKE!!!” displays in the instrument cluster.

Mine works great, I thought I’d hate it, but it seems great so far.

Tip: on my 2022 if I press the cruise control on button for 2 seconds, cruise works with radar disabled.

The only thing I like is the rear traffic alert and blind spot monitoring. Adaptive cruise is really annoying to me and I never use it unless I'm on a long trip.

I used to love Cruise Control on long drives, but there seems to be too much traffic now to be safe to use. The idea that it's adaptive sounds intriguing if it works as advertised.
 
Sounds like the system works as promised, and if there are problems, it just doesn't work, as opposed to causing other problems?

It works as advertised, but I find it annoyingly slow to speed up after slowing down. Its makes noise inside the cabin which I find annoying as well. So I just stick with regular cruise most of the time since I don't want the vehicle doing any part of the driving for me.

I have always driven underpowered vehicles, so Cruise Control was always slow to accelerate after slowing down ;). I hear you about having the car "drive itself", never felt completely comfortable, but maybe I just need to get used to it by trying it more.

What is the "noise" inside the cabin?

Its a clicking noise when it slows down.
 
I am sure its reliable as far as not breaking. But Toyota has a long way to go in refinement and non annoying category.
 
The front collision avoidance system works well. I was farting around with the radio and not paying attention to the guy in front of me who put on his brakes. The 4runner beeped, a warning appeared on the screen, and applied the brakes for me. It saved me from rear ending some guy who didn’t deserve to have me ruin his day.

The rear cross traffic alert works well most of the time. Sometimes it is too sensitive and alerts me to things that are pretty far away or aren’t moving at all. Sometimes I think it could be more sensitive.

I love the adaptive cruise control. Comparatively, my wife has a Subaru Crosstrek that cost $20k less and can do all the things listed above and literally drive itself around curves on the highway. The adaptive cruise control on the Subaru can also bring you to a complete stop and then resume when the car in front of you moves... like in stop and go rush hour traffic. At first we were apprehensive about all this self driving technology. But after using it for a year, it’s really awesome.

you'll like it when you start using it and become comfortable. it already saved my family from a major collision with a big deer in yellowstone. in addition to that, your insurance rate will be lower because of that feature. adaptive cruise control is awesome too when you are on that long stretch of road and stretch your legs up if you want. lol.
 
Only once so far has the "BRAKE" in red appear on the center gauge cluster but I think I was already about to brake anyways. Sometimes it is too sensitive where it starts beeping yet I have plenty of distance left. I have set it so it is more sensitive for when the wife drives it with the little one, added safety threshold. It is nice that you can adjust your sensitively as you like. The lane departure warning I find it a bit delayed, as I'm already into the other lane and then it alerts me, not sure if that can be adjusted as well?
Despite all these electronic helping agents working as they should, I still try to drive as careful as possible, and not having to rely on them, basically pretend as if they don't exist.

Thanks Buba,
I'm 58 so been driving my whole life without a nanny, but as long as its reliable and not too intrusive (I like that it can be adjusted) it will make a nice "backup" as I do occasionally miss something in my blind spot.

I’ll be very candid with you about how I feel about this. There is NO way that TSS could intervene successfully and reliably with as close as I got before any warning appeared.

To be fair, I was already on the brakes, so I don’t know if it still applies them (harder) if it detects you’re already braking.
