Is TRD PRO worth the cash?

Sure. If you can find one and pay the premium.

I couldn't find one, I didn't know the price point, so I took an ORP that was in my local showroom with some TRD Pro options. Point being, you can take any Off Road and put parts on it to make it a Pro. I don't think the VIN designates a Pro from any other T4R for that matter, so when all is said and done its badging, painted plastic, wheels, bodywork and a suspension you can buy off the shelf. (If you are really sneaky buy a color that you know was offered in the model year of your truck like I did, a 17 in Super White.)

But, when I see what I think is a real Pro on the trail I do get just a little jealous. Then I just reach up and open my sunroof and I get over it. :)
 
For me it was worth every penny, but I was lucky enough to get mine under msrp. The few Pro's I have seen come up for sale here and on the internet have sold very quickly.

That's a loaded question....

There's a plethora of follow-up questions that need to be answered first...

What's your goal and purpose of the vehicle?
Intended length of ownership?


If you're going to modify the vehicle heavily, probably not worth the money as you'll be swapping out a bunch of parts.

If you're keeping it for a few years, then it's the best investment in terms of vehicle ownership due to it's high demand and resale value. There's been more than a handful of 2+ year old Pro's that sold for more than MSRP - seriously.
 
I was in the same debate with myself. But after negotiating for a 2018 Off Road for 48K all in which it $10,315.08 cheaper than the Pro (If I were to get it at MSRP). So it was a pretty easy decision after seeing the numbers on paper.

I really liked the Quicksand color. If it came in any other trim other than PRO, I would not have gotten the PRO.

But overall very happy with the PRO. Get lots of comments everywhere I go.
 
I love the pro, after researching a bit I figured this would be the best route to go (resale value included). I will lightly mod mine...

After deciding that, there was no way I wasn't going to get the special color... very happy with this truck.

I have 2017 TRD Pro and open my sunroof as well lol. Thanks To Toyota Canada:).

To the OP, I’m not planning to replace TRDP suspension so for daily driving/mall crawling it’s perfect. No regrets at all and it’s a beast for me even in factory form. Love it.
 
people who bought the pro seem to think its worth, and people who didn't buy don't seem to worth it, so basically 99 percent of 4runner owners don't think its worth it but they still want it.
 
I think there is a lot of customers that want them. They just cannot get them because of the low production of them. The salesman I deal with at the Toyota dealer told me how it works as far as getting one. You can ask for one but they cannot tell you when you will get one. The dealership has to get one allocated to them.
 
For me, yes. I wanted a truck that would get me into the trails where I live right out of the box. I did not want to have to dick around with researching and installing after market suspension parts, wheels, tires and all of the cosmetic pieces that make it look like a Pro. I did not buy it to cruise around thinking, "Look at me, I'm in a Pro!" I bought a truck that drives through mud, over rocks, through tree limbs and bushes to get me to remote locations so that I can hike, mountain climb, ski and snowshoe. I love the way it looks, love the way it handles and have no plans to change it other than armoring it up and adding self recovery tools.

I get a kick out of folks who buy another trim then spend the cost difference to make it look like a Pro. Sure their upgraded after market suspension may be better but mine was engineered by Toyota to work with the rest of the vehicle (there are threads where people admit to problems with am suspensions) and is covered under warranty.

When I get too old to play in the mountains anymore I'm going to sell it for close to what I bought it for and buy a Prius.

Right on, drove past an XP in white earlier and thought to myself.. I'd have had truck envy if I got anything else. Sounds silly but its true

Out the box for me it was perfect, which means you can enjoy it and mod at your own pace instead of ripping part your new ride to make it how you want.

Yeah you pay for that luxury but if you work for the money buy what you want or else you're buying something you don't - Simples!
 
wish i could have they look bad ass cement since I'm a concrete contractor very happy with my 2018 white sr5 took sr5 badges off. traded dealer strait across for brand new trail wheels painted them and calipers satin black.
 
The whole question of "worth" can mean so many different things depending on the perspective of the person you ask, as can be seen in reading the responses to your question.

The basic definition of "worth" revolves around the question of value. In my book value is demonstrated by how much you can sell something for to a willing buyer. From my perspective, I was able to buy a 2018 TRD Pro in Cavalry Blue for MSRP, without a doubt it was "worth" it.

Specifically, I have a vehicle that meets my needs and I can sell it tomorrow for anywhere from $5000 to $10000 more than I paid for it.

Contrast this with someone who buys another 4Runner version and SPENDS (hopefully not on their revolving charge account) whatever amount to modify it to meet their needs, but ends up with a vehicle that is "worth" less than the total that they have spent. That is, it was "worth" it to them to make the modifications, but from a financial perspective the "value" is not there like it is with a TRD Pro.

I love your enthusiasm and i have an 18 TRD Pro myself, but you are living in fantasy land if you think you can sell your used 4Runner for 5-10K over the MSRP of a new one.
 
As someone who agonized over the decison a month ago - definitely not. I got a great deal on an off road premium with kdss. Ive since changed the grill, bumper inserts, ordered rack, speakers, and a few minor upgrades within the first few days. Planning on getting a lift, wheels and tires soon. I will have a better car than the PRO for thousands less, and if I really want to - I could make it look just like the PRO.

I knew, even if I got the Pro, that I would mod it, so at that point it makes no sense to spend that kind of money. All the models will retain their value pretty well.

Same here..I looked into the cement last year..half because I love the color and half because I'm also a masonry contractor

1. Those are list prices, not what they are selling for or what the original owner was paid.

2. All 4Runners have exceptional resale value, which is why I bought new instead of used.

Agreed to a point. 4Runners do hold their value, but you're not making any money with the pro when you sell it, just getting close to what you paid like all other 4Runners. I bought mine for roughly 35 k and if I sold it for 30, with 50 or 60 thousand miles on it, that would be awesome. If you did the same thing with a pro buying it for roughly 50 and selling it for 45, you've made no more money.

The Ops question was Trail versus Pro. If you're going to lose only 5 grand with either truck, why tie up extra cash in your investment?
