Is X-REAS worth a 3 Month wait?

Hello everyone,

I am in the process of getting/ordering my first 4Runner.

What I want is the following:

- 2005 4x4, V8, Limited, (Almost) Fully Loaded
- Black Exterior / Tan Leather Interior
- 50 State Emissions
- JBL w/Navigation
- Sunroof
- Rear Spoiler
- Side Curtain Airbags
- Daytime Running Light
- 6 Disk CD Changer
- X-REAS shock Absorbers

Now, most of these features can be found on one of the local dealers lots. The X-REAS however is another matter.

While it is a common option on the East coast, out here on the West coast if you mention X-REAS and Limited in the same sentence the sales person goes cross-eyed and stutters.
:bash:

After contacting MANY dealerships to located this vehicle I've been unable to find these options ANYWHERE on the West Coast. :(

The only options I seem to have are:
1. Place a Preference Order for a vehicle in this configuration.
2. Try to locate one on the East coast and have it transported out here (must pay approx $1000 - $2000 transportation fee).
3. Settle for one with everything EXCEPT for X-REAS on it.

Now, I've found a GREAT dealership that is willing to order the vehicle at an AWESOME price ($500 over Invoice). The only problems are that it will take up to 3 or 4 months and Toyota might even refuse to make this vehicle at any point.

So the question I have for everyone is Is the X-REAS really worth all this trouble & delay?

I really like the way the truck handles with it and I'm afraid I'd regret not getting it everytime I corner in the 4Runner.

I do plan on putting a small lift (2") on 4runner in the distant future but I REALLY enjoy the way the truck handles my current "style" of driving which is what I would call "spirited".

HELP!! :awais:

Welcome to CA

Hi,

I just went through trying to find an '05 4Runner Limited 4x4 V6 with XREAS in Northern California. Short of waiting 3 months and paying over MSRP for it there was nothing out there. Apparently CA dealers don't think the CA market wants a Limited with XREAS and as such you'd have to special order it and pay for the privilege as well!

I ended up searching other states and came up with several places that have Limiteds configured with XREAS. I bought mine from a dealer in Peoria Arizona over the internet. The guy was awesome and he offered me a great price upfront. Let me know if you want his name and number.

The 4Runner is a 50 state emission vehicle so it would be no problem bringing it back from AZ to CA. They'll give you a "drive out" plate for $20 and you can just go to the DMV and register it when you go back to CA.

I'm flying out on Friday to pick up my Black/Stone V6 Limited 4x4 w/ XREAS and going to drive it back to NorCal. The deal I got was good enough to make it worth flying out and driving back.

Good luck.

Thank You !!!

Thanks for the info 4runneraj!

Yes, please send a private message to me with that dealers information!

:bigok:

I'd MUCH rather get my 4Runner sooner rather than later!

:biggrin2:

Snap,

Trust me when I say I went through the same thing and agonized over the fact that XREAS would be a deal breaker for me.

Coming from a person that drives an IS300 with major suspension mods (coilvers, strut tower bars, LSD, lightweight wheels, etc) and autox's...

After test driving the SE model several times with XREAS and now having a limited model without XREAS. I would say the difference is minimal. Definitely not the dealbreaker I thought it was. The biggest difference is that the XREAS equiped truck regains composure (wiggling after a large bump) ever so much quicker. Also, it's roll resistance is really about the same (roll bars determine this, not the x-resevoirs). In terms of at the limit handling...can't say. But the non-XREAS limited I have does very well. I'm not looking to push the truck through turns at 9/10ths. Spirited driving is just fine. If you are considering any suspension mods at all on the T4R...go without the XREAS.

Hope that helps.

Paul

I got the Sport in large part due to the X-REAS suspension. I noticed a difference. However, I agree with Paul on this one. If you are serious about upgrading the suspension than do without the X-REAS.

The money you save can be invested in coil overs and A arms. Figure the cost of X-REAS and spacers versus coil overs and A arms. Should be pretty close to even. But the coil overs/A arms will do a better job of equipping you for offroad.

See RL Lemke's post on his conversion for his review.

Black and tan - good beer, good 4Runner color!

Thanks for all the info.

Let me clarify something.

The most by way of a lift I would ever want, with or without X-REAS is 2-3".

This is going to be my daily driver vehicle and I'd much rather have onroad (85% of my driving) handling and performance versus offroad (15% of my driving). The lift would be to put the 4Runner where I feel it should have been from the start (1-3" taller).

Couple of points -

1) If you want to tow - get the air suspension option. This requires X-REAS.

2) I don't think you can raise the suspension with X-REAS. (Not certain)

ah, but RL's lift is only 3". Search for "Lifts" because you will find good observations from others regarding their lifting experiences. RL makes an interesting point when he says that the spacers plus the X-REAS is not nearly the equal of no X-REAS with the coil overs.

Anyways, I am just throwing this to you because I originally was going to do just spacers too. However, I just might rip out the X-REAS and do it right with coil overs.

i say buy one in the east coast and drive it back yerself --by the time you get back it will be broken in :D

come up to canada and pick yourself a limited.. with xreas.... with air suspension and everything else. It'll be simple and fast.

If I'm not mistaken, when you get the Limited with X-REAS, it also comes with the rear air suspension. Both are part of the same option. Also, you may not need the lift with the air suspension. With the air suspension set on high, the rear of the vehicle is higher then a 3" lift. It works really nice. I have these options and I think it is worth the wait. I will be doing my first off-roading (with my Limited 4R) this weekend. I'll post about how this setup works, real world.

The X-REAS is a separate option than the Air Suspension.

Yes, if you get the Air Suspension, the X-REAS also comes with it but you can also get just the X-REAS alone.

And from what I've learned, the additional height the Air Suspension gives you is:
A. Only on the back end.
B. Only for very low speeds.
C. Intended for load leveling, not offroad clearance.

You call only get two option packages with the Limited (A or B). On the Limited 4Runner you can't get the and air susp. without the X-REAS. (it's part of the option B package $5400). To get X-REAS alone you would have to get option A package (no Nav. either).

Yes the air susp. only lifts the back, but it lifts it very high (higher then a 3" rear lift).

It will stay at the high or low setting up to 25mph, which is OK for off-roading.

It was intended for towing (auto/normal setting), loading (low setting), and off roading (high setting).

Hi, here's what my experience has been...

Option packages that you see on Toyota's web site or at your dealer depend on what region you buy in. Most 4Runners will come pre-configured in each trim level with either Package A and/or Package B.

Packages differ from region to region.

In California for instance, neither XREAS nor the air suspension are available on the Limited (v8 or v6) 4Runner. In Arizona the XREAS is included as part of package A for the v6 Limited and both A & B for the v8 Limited. Neither one gets Air suspension.

Go to the build your own on Toyota.com and put in 85382 for the zip code and you'll see what I'm talking about.

At the end of the day you can custom build it (by having the dealer preference a vehicle), but like it has been stated before there is 3-4 month wait, a premium to be paid and no guarantee that you get the configuration that you want.

Like it was explained to me, this is how Toyota sells cars. I may not like it, but I still want my 4Runner :D

I've driven both XREAS and NON XREAS equipped runners and I have to say that if I had to do it all over again I would go with no XREAS and save my money.

www.prestigetoyota.com has 3 of those;): but thats east coast:)

I too would skip out on the XREAS if I could do it all over again. I had it for over a year before someone's crap products made it blow up, so then I had to switch over to coilovers. Thing is, coilovers have handled better than XREAS in the first place!

Are you serious T, the stuff you installed screwed up your XREAS. Damm I would be pissed off at the individual.
