Issues when driving through two pretty big puddles..

So yesterday I went off-roading and hit two pretty good size puddles. First one no problem! Second one ehhhh not so good. I cleared the puddle but shortly after I noticed the 4runner was dead. So I started it up no problem. (I was not in any water when I started it) So once I started it I now have a check engine light (I'll read it here in about a hour and a half to see what it says.) Now it drives alright... First is good, 2nd is good until my RPMs get to about 5x then it sputters kinda but once it shifts to 3rd it's totally fine. So far... I haven't drove above 60mph yet to see how good it really is..

Any ideas?

I got a CEL from a puddle once. The next day I pulled the battery cable and it didn't come back. My bet is on water getting on a ignition coil or the MAF. Let it sit awhile then pull the battery cable to see if it comes back.

But what about the sputtery engine? Thats not normal..

Sounds like you sucked in water. If it was just something getting wet it most likely would not have died. I have done this before.

First tear down air box and clean or replace filter. You want to make sure the air box is dry.

Pull all wires, coils and plugs. Inspect and let dry. Replace wires and plugs if they have not been done lately.

Let motor sit for hours without plugs to dry out.

Check out what can be causing the CEL.

Put it back together and pray to toyota gods. Worst case is hydrolocked but that usually will cause major smoke due to burning oil and water.

If still having issues I would do full compression check and leak down test.

What could I do to prevent this besides staying away from water. I like water

Did you check your intake box ? Pull the sparks and clean

What could I do to prevent this besides staying away from water. I like water

The water sucks in at the top of the fender. Go slow and steady. Hitting the water hard will push the water up into the intake.

Generally water half way up the tire is highest you want to go. You can get water in both diffs if breathers not extended.

Make sure you change oil since sucking in water can contaminate it.

It's time for a snorkel! And make sure you get extended breathers for your diffferntial and all that other good stuff under the truck

Amen. And the ultimate water crossing truck. Would be put in a diesel !!

But yes snorkel, and extended breathers. I wouldn't worry about extending transmission or transfer case. Those are at the top. If you go that deep. You will have other issues. Water up to your knees basically
