"It Doesn't Pay To Save A Buck!"

I have an interesting story regarding the use of local mechanic vs. a Toyota dealership when having scheduled maintenance done on your T4R.
I own a 2006 Limited V8 4X2 that has been in great working condition until I took it to a local mechanic for some routine maintenance. I was past due on having the timing belt, water pump, and coolant replaced and decided to have the serpentine belt replaced as well since they would have the old one off. I did get quotes from the dealership and two other local mechanics and decided to go with the mechanic that gave the best quote, but he also had excellent customer reviews and was closest to my home. This shop changed out my timing belt, water pump, serpentine belt, and radiator since the radiator had a leak. When it was given back to me I noticed that the check engine light along with a few others were on when I was driving to work. I returned my vehicle back to the shop and they said it was pulling multiple codes and needed to figure out what sensors are bad. None of the sensors were bad, so the mechanic pulled everything apart that he replaced and still couldn't figure out what was causing the codes. He calls the Toyota dealership for opinions and help because he was stumped and the Toyota mechanic said it sounds like it could be the variable timing gear. The mechanic changed out the variable timing gear and still pulling codes :mmph:. During the changing of the variable timing gear the mechanic broke one of the cam shafts, so then I got a new cam shaft installed on the mechanic's dime. Next, the mechanic changed out the tension bar and timing belt again since he thought the issues were coming from one or both of these parts. After all these parts were changed out, the shop owner was at a loss and informed me that he was taking my T4R to the Toyota dealership to be diagnosed and repaired out of his pocket. When the Toyota mechanic ran the diagnostics on my 4Runner he found multiple codes being pulled and a lot of misfiring, so he pulled the engine apart and found that the timing belt that the local shop installed was shredded and exhaust cams were out of timing by two teeth :tsk:. Toyota took three days going through my 4Runner with a fine tooth comb and realigned the exhaust cams, replaced the idler pulley, tension bar, timing belt, and replaced the coolant using Toyota OEM parts and all codes are gone. Between the local shop and Toyota dealer my 4Runner was being worked on for over two weeks just for routine maintenance. The shop owner ended up paying Toyota over $1400.00 for parts and labor plus the cost of all the parts they put on my vehicle that Toyota replaced and the new cam shaft and variable timing gear. I ended up paying $1,100.00 in the beginning after the initial parts and labor.
I learned my lesson the hard way in using a local shop and not taking it to my Toyota dealership in the first place because I was trying to save money. I will never use that shop again and I will use the Toyota service department for all my future repairs and maintenance that I can't handle myself. :thumb3:

Interesting story and sorry to hear that. I'm a local/independent shop mechanic and basically, sh!t happens. not trying to make excuses just trying to explain the situation.

That being said, at least the guy stood up and took responsibility. That speaks a lot to their integrity of nothing else.

Shoddy work can be found anywhere. A lot of guys cut corners or get in over their heads with some new job. I've seen dealership repairs come thru my shop that these experts shredded. One example is a broken valve cover ear from them not pulling all the bolts and prying the cover off with a bolt remaining. Sent him out with a massive oil leak.

So again, sorry to hear it. It's very unfortunate and once trust is gone, it's hard to regain. Hopefully the dealership warrants better results for you.

Good luck.

Thanks, but fortunately I was very patient during this whole fiasco and gave the mechanic the benefit of the doubt to fix my 4Runner before stopping him and taking it to the dealer myself. This was my first time using this local shop, so it wasn't the best 1st time customer experience. The crazy thing was that he has 25 years experience and has worked on many Toyota's, so I'm not sure why he was having so much trouble? Just glad to have my 4Runner back :drummer:.

Midway through reading this I had a thought in my head that one of the cams was out of timing.

Ouch! That's a bummer but all's well that ends well I guess. Regarding and independent mechanic vs Toyota it's never easy to choose unless you have personal experience. I won't use my local dealership after they came up with a laundry list of services that I needed. Right, I didn't need them. The tech must have just looked at the mileage and wrote up a list based on that. On the other hand I use an independent shop that's not only good but also honest. They did my last timing belt but I've used them for years and they've proven themselves to me. No way I'd bring a t-belt job to an unproven mechanic.

Glad you finally got things worked out!

Thank you and I am glad everything worked out the way it did. I feel like I came out ahead by having all these parts replaced and now my 4Runner is performing great! I normally take my vehicles to a different local mechanic for many years who I trust, but didn't this time because he quoted me over $1,300.00 for a job I was quoted for $800.00. I guess next time I get a lower quote I'll see if he will match that since I've been a long time customer. :drum:

At least it is all fixed up. I am to the point where I have decided If I can't or am unable to do the maintenance I will only take my vehicles to a dealer service department. I worked for a major chain autoparts store while going to college and dealt with a lot of mechanics in my area. I never met a single one that I would trust to work on my vehicles.

That is sad! Unfortunately, your taking a risk every time when putting your investment in the hands of someone that you hope is going to fix and maintain it according to your expectations.

So lets not be too mean to that shop. I asked many shops if they could rebuild my motor when I blew it up and one of them looked at it and told me that that a v8 4wd 4runner is just about the most complicated engine removal process they have ever seen on any car and its unlikely that they could guarantee that everything would work. I liked their honesty and would probably do maintenance there because they chose not to jerk me around and tell me "yeah, we have done like 50 of those trucks..."

Well, the most important part is...you got your 4R back it's fine.
Sorry to hear about the trouble, and the added cost....
although you DID want to have a lot done, at least initially.
The only time I went to a dealer is when I bought a new car and it was under warranty.
The rest of my life, I have gone to local mechanics that I trusted. (only two)
Both of them proved their honesty again and again...
and I truly believe that having that long lasting PERSONAL relationship just makes them all the more trustworthy.
Not saying there aren't any good dealership service departments...
but you rarely have that kind of one-on-one with a dealer, since you never know what mechanic you'll get.
My wife decided to get her car inspected by someone else (who was closer)
and she ended up paying them for an inspection she never used...
as they wanted to charge her $400 more for it to pass.

Yeah, I do use a local mechanic that I trust and has always taken good care of my cars, but for the timing belt job he was going to charge me more than the dealership. Next time I'll just see if he will do a price match if I find a lower quote since I know he does quality work.

Remember, just as we, the consumer, like having a mechanic we can trust...
good mechanics like to have regular customers they can count on.
If you bring him a fair amount of work...
he should be willing to price match, especially if it's a DEALER price.

I'm very glad to hear that mechanic made things right. There's a mechanic near us who is ****ing shady as hell. He stripped the bolt on my friends turbo and then welded it to the downpipe to prevent it from leaking. As soon as he got it back, cel was on and was running like shit. We popped the hood and saw the weld on the turbo. Brought it back and the mechanic *****ed at us for ****ing it up. Like wtf? We spread the word around and now not many people go to him.

Also, with that, I try to avoid generic mechanic for the reason you had. They're good for basic things, but you should find a master Toyota tech for intensive things like that.

i'm glad you got your rig back in one piece and running.

i have been in the dealership business for over 10 years, in both parts and service departments, and i cant tell enough people "HAVE A TRUSTED MECHANIC!" Doesn't matter dealership or Independant, someone you can trust when it comes to automotive work.

sometimes cheapest is not always the best either. for me id rather pay a little more to have a peace of mind knowing that my mechanic is capable of doing the work and i doing it right, regardless if dealership or independent shop!

my 2 pennies

Thanks for sharing this. I should learn my lesson. It's not that some individual mechanics are bad it's just at the Toyota dealership can only do certain things to Toyota vehicles. Same reason I'll never take my Runner to a Chevy dealership. Becsuse Allstate said it was a reputable shop didn't mean it'd be returned with American clips that "almost" fit, holding up my bumper lol
