I've got a $15K budget for my old 4th Gen...help me spend it.

Okay, I purchased my 2006 Sports Edition 4x4 V6 in Titanium Silver in October of 2005 when they first appeared on the lot! Brand new. It only has about 98,000 miles on it believe it or not.

It's time to turn my 4Runner into the beast that I've always wanted it to be. I'm much older now...with a big boy job that pays...so I'd like to see it finally come it's pinnacle for the remaining days of its life.

I'm mostly interested in outside modifications.

- lights lights lights
- snorkel
- lift
- dropping XREAS and getting something better
- headers?
- new front grill/bumper
- skid plates
- LEDs
- I'd love to go URD bolt on turbo kit, but it's not California friendly.

what else should I be looking at? Would there be a place I could drop it off at where they would basically overhaul the entire thing for me?

One of my biggest inspirations is @T4R_Dan on Instagram - his rig is similar to mine.

Without knowing what you actually want to do with it, kind of hard to make recommendations… What is your main use case, and what type of driving / wheeling do you like to do?

Personally I love nice suspension and it would be easy for me to dump all 15k into suspension.

If it’s a new to you 2006, I would start with basic maintenance. Fluids all around for motor, coolant, ATF, brakes, diffs, transferase.
Repair anything that needs to be repaired.

Upgrade:

• Long Travel is you are a avid desert goer, if not, 2.5” RR shocks with adjusters all the way around with upper control arms and springs appropriate to deal with any additional weight like bumpers.
• Lockers if you don’t have them.
• Gearing if required by tire size.
• Tires and rims with an offset to increase track width
• Lighting if you need it
• Armor if you like the rocks
• Roof rack has been great for tables, shoves, and other long or dirty items I dont want in the truck.
• Fridge if you camp a lot

Having played with a lot of light… I can tell you now that less is more. I have a bunch of lighting, and my absolute favorite is just running the 30” bar in my bumper. I would do something similar if I were you. I have a 40” bar on the roof and I never use it because of the windshield and hood glare. In the desert, giving chase in a dusty environment is even worse. Lighting mounted lower than eye level and far forward seems to be a lot better.

Do you wheel it, how often, how aggressively?

Are you a camping guy, take family, solo?

You looking for engine performance, off-road ability, aesthetics, mall crawler??

Where in CA do you live? Snorkels - how often do you cross rivers? Can help if you travel in someone else dust, but then again you can always just back off..

And percentages of all the answers would be a useful guide.

At the core of any good updates is maintenance, followed by, in no particular order
- suspension
- skids
- navigation
- tools and recovery gear
- camping equipment

I think lots of lighting is just a "thing" - maybe nice to have but, umm..well whatever floats your boat.

$15K would get you a fairly good offroad travel trailer if you do lots of camping and especially if you have passengers.

Any reupholstering? Definitely light mods, new suspension/lift, new wheels/tires, yotamafia grill, and then look at armor depending on what wheeling you do. I wouldn't do a snorkel, personally, as I have no need for it.

Sell it and buy a street vehicle. Unless you actually plan to offroad it, you'll get tired of all the aftermarket offroad parts on the street.

The clear coat on the roof is bad, the fenders, spoiler, some of the hood, and grill are faded, or the clear coat is coming off. I've gotten some estimates for around $3000. I plan to keep it 20 years so it'll be worth it to me. This spring I added Bilteins 6112 fronts, bilteins rear, with a 1 inch coil in rear to give it a little lift. Also bought new tires, and changed out the interior lighting to LED. I also did a HID projector retrofit.
