A local dealer told me they are not getting 2020 Pro's but have other trim levels, and if i wanted a Pro i can order 1...i asked him if he had any 2019 Pro's left on the lot. He said "TRD Pro's are new for 2020, it did not exist last year"...i literally laughed and thanked him (for what i dont know, i guess i just felt bad for him)...it is incredible how little some of these dealers know about their products...pretty embarassing....just had to share lol

It's amazing how clueless and dumb dealerships are

I honestly feel most (not all) of them know better. I suspect they just don’t have one in the pipeline to sell you, or management needs them to clear stuff off the lot so they try and steer you towards something immediately available at the cost of making themselves sound idiotic.

Trying to give them the benefit of the doubt here because it’s way too incredibly stupid to be in that position and not know what you are selling.

Isn't the Sequoia TRD Pro brand new for 2020? Maybe he was just confusing the 2

i could tell by the way he was talking about the vehicle that he had no clue...i just dont understand why they dont properly train their employees. I dont expect them to be experts on every single aspect of every vehicle but they should know a lot more than they do...its not like buying a pack of gum

As 4Runner enthusiasts, we’re almost always going to know more than the salespeople about 4Runners. We get that from spending way too much time in this forum!

They’re their to connect potential customers to vehicles. Toyota sells a lot of models. They know “enough” to make the pairings, but... yeah: we’re pretty much always be more expert on 4Rs.

Go in with that expectation and you’ll be less disappointed.

And do not toss around initialisms like ORP. That means nothing to them.

Getting pissed off at their lack of knowledge is just going to gnaw at you needlessly. The air of superiority isn’t gonna move you any closer to closing a deal.

you're not wrong...at all...but there is a big difference between knowing a lot and knowing enough. i dont expect them to know the details like many do here, but if they dont know that a TRD Pro existed before 2020, that is just surprising...if i knew that little about my place of work i would not last very long!

Yeah, the car salesman job today is a high-turnover position. If you're fortunate to get a tenured person, you might have a more knowledgeable one. But since there are so many models and trims and packages, it's hard to expect a newer salesperson to know all that. Be patient, realize that you know your vehicles, and understand they're just trying to bring home a paycheck.

I bought my 89 4Runner at Longo....biggest dealership in the World. I told the guy to show Me all the White SR-5 V-6's he had. He said to hop in the golf cart and We would go look at 4Runners but there was no such thing as a V-6 version, ''they all have 4 cylinders''........We were standing in front of one so I pointed at the chrome ''V-6'' badge in the grille...............:redbrick:

Yep, and think of all the sub-models within a model. Then throw in Scion, which many dealers also sell. You can’t expect a given sales person to know all the ins/outs of all the variations available.

My salesman has many years of experience with 4Runners and has many of those silly banners and plaques validating his product knowledge. I still found small things on my vehicle that was not aware of.

Again, I do not expect them to know every little thing, you guys are reading it wrong...I would expect them to know that the trd pro is not a new vehicle for 2020...I really don’t think that’s asking a lot. Like if I go into an ice cream store I don’t think they should know every ingredient in each flavor, but I do think they should know that it’s cold!!!

Knowing that ice cream is cold is a lot different than knowing or confusing when the trd pro edition, which that dealership has probably sold like 10 of in history, came out.

Surprised that it’s acceptable honestly...not trying to start anything here, was just surprised that’s all...I feel bad for customers who purchase from these types of sales people..we can move on

I was pleasantly surprised with my experience recently (First time Toyota owner), but yes... this does not surprise me in the least.

For anyone near Raleigh NC, Jeff (Toyota Jeff on YouTube) is wacky, but great at Fred Anderson Toyota.

I've found that most salesman know very little about the features other than the infotainment systems. I had owned 2 4Runners before buying my 5th gen and I knew more of the specs and info than the sales guy did, but that was also because I did my own research while looking for a 5th gen.

A good salesman works for you, not the dealer. Treat them with respect, they're humans, just like you. And the dealer will be as ruthless with them over nickels and dimes as they are with you.

When I bought mine in 2013 the salesman told me that the groundhog whistle from the air induction pump at startup and shutdown was from the "KDSS priming."

Idiot also gave me 2012 floor mats without the 2013 anchors and then proceeded to cut holes in them.

Here's the thing though, its their fvcking job to sell cars. They need to be up to speed on all aspects of the product they sell. IIRC Toyota actually flies out salespeople (voluntary?) to internal events to get up to speed on models/sales.

So yeah, we as consumers should expect car salesmen to be experts on the product they are pushing; however there's some disconnect happening which always leaves the consumer to shit on car dealerships. It's unfortunate that the majority of them appear to be bums off the street who can't be bothered to have any sense of professional decorum and only trained to sell ice to eskimos.

THANK YOU!

that is the response i expected from most of you guys...not sure why some people are defending the clear lack of knowledge...you're right..it is their job...
