About a month ago I installed a Magnaflow catback. It sounded great, I was very happy until.... it broke in. DRONE CITY. The resonance with the windows up at certain RPMS was extremely uncomfortable.
I'm no stranger to aftermarket exhaust on a V8... I've owned several V8 Mustangs over the years with various exhaust systems (mostly Magnaflow) and never heard anything like this before. It was not good.
I knew I didn't want to go back to stock... so I started looking at what my options were and did some reading...
I took some measurements and figured I had just enough room for a large resonator in place of the long straight pipe right infront of the muffler.
I purchased a 2.5" Vibrant Ultra Quiet Resonator, made 2 cuts in the straight pipe with a pipe cutter and slipped it over the 2 end pieces. I reinstalled the pipe and took it for a spin... still throaty but just not so abrasive sounding. I gave it a week to 'break in' and it did get a little louder but still very quiet. After I was sure I was happy with it, the local muffler shop charged me $20 to weld it on.
I did have to bend the heat shield above it just slightly in order to make room for it. I've got about 1/2" of clearance above the rear edge. A tight fit but it does fit.
I'd estimate it reduced the resonance that happens just before the 1-2 shift and again just before the 2-3 shift by about 50%. Overall volume is probably reduced by 50% or so.
At idle - 25% throttle you can hear a nice note inside the truck but outside it sounds nearly stock. At 50%-75% throttle you get a nice throaty exhaust note both inside and ouside the truck and then strangely at 100% throttle you can hear the engine more than you can hear the exhaust inside the truck and outside its actually slightly more quiet than 50% throttle.
For me its damn near perfect.
