Are you backing up your rappel? Rappelling is, in my opinion, the most overlooked aspect of climbing in terms of safety.

Folks, if you are of the climbing variety, and aren't already backing up your rappel, start doing it.

Scroll to Friction knot below the BD
Another method and another example

Freedom of the Hills also has a good example. I'll scan the page out of the book for you, if you PM me.

Don't be blots on the ground. Back up your rappel!

Thanks for looking out. I usually use an auto block for the girlfriend however on this occasion we didn't. Unfortunately I had one in the truck but we had already made the climb up. I agree 100% that rappelling is often overlooked and in fact is probably the most dangerous activity in the climbing world.

You would have shit your pants if you would have seen what our team was doing in the jungles of Hawaii! Hasty raps, wet ropes, 70lbs packs....

Thanks again though! I was wondering if anyone was going to notice that

Got the Cooper ST Maxx 255/80 R17's mounted. I immediately took them down some dirt roads and so far they feel great! I'm going to have to get used to the "skinny" look, but so far I'm pleased. Form over function! As you can see I use the shit out of my truck so it's the farthest thing from a pavement princess. Hopefully these will hold up as well as the Duratracs did. :wink2:

I have the same tires. Extremely pleased. Only downside I have found to the skinny tire is less wheel protection compared to a fat tire. A few more nicks on the wheels but that adds character.

How wide were your duratracs and have you noticed any change in gas mileage?

You'll have to google the width. I'm fairly certain I lost an inch or so going to the Coopers. They would look a lot skinnier if it wasn't for the somewhat aggressive sidewall.

In no way am I trying to sound like an ass, but I could care less about gas mileage. I was getting around 16.8 with the duratracs (which I consider a blessing), now that I've got the coopers...16.7. I live in CO and I'm either driving uphill or downhill and I'm not exaggerating! I ski about 5 days a week and I'm in 4WD everyday I head into the front range to ski, so my gas mileage is a little skewed.

Oh, and I'll retract my statement about not caring about gas mileage. If it was around 12 I would be pissed off all of the time, but I consider 16.7 decent for what I do and where I live. :trophy:

Looking awesome! The Coopers are awesome[ly heavy] tires! I have a collective 40k on them between my work truck and 4Runner. Solid tires. I wanted the tall skinnies, but I need some more real estate between tire and fender before that can happen. Sooooooon.....

if it makes you feel better i was averaging 17 scaling vail pass at 95mph in a 2015 F150 5.0V8

I'm terrified to see what my 4Runner would have managed though, as i average 15.8-16 with 35s and my 4x4labs bumper driving around at 80-85mph on the interstate.

if you think the coopers are heavy, pick up a General Grabber. if you think thats heavy, pick up a Toyo Open Country M/T. If you didnt injure yourself yet from picking up the tires, go pick up a BFG A/T and laugh about how pathetic it is.

So, I've hit the 100 mile mark with the coopers and I'm extremely impressed. Since mounted I've driven in mud, snow, dirt roads, rocky double track, and of course pavement. probably 25 miles of that is in 4wd.

1. They're quite.
2. They're smooth
3. I "think" they're a little better in the snow. However, when they slip, they slip! It's almost as if they don't shed snow as well as the duratracs did, but if the snow is releasing from the tread (based on speed and snow type) they hold traction far better than the duratracs and give you the confidence to traverse some pretty deep sections.
4. Mud - see section 3.
5. They're skinny! I'm going to be completely honest...they're way too skinny for me. Wider is better
6. Gas mileage down from 16.8 to 16.7 :lalala:
7. They look great when aired down...kind of like a 285s!

Well, it looks like all of my abuse has taken its toll. Dropped the Runner off to get my front driver side wheel bearing replaced. I couldn't hear it before b/c of the road noise from the Duratracs. Now that I've got the coopers, it's been coming in loud and clear. This morning I put the truck on jack stands and there was no movement at all in any of the wheels, however, I could definitely hear a roar coming from the front tires. Toyota quoted me $750 - 850 per wheel...:loco: I ended up going to a local shop and they knocked it out in 2 hours for $400.00.

NOW...my multi terrain light and slip indicator light is on....FML...

I hope it's a quick fix! I wonder if that shop may have hit your abs wires. I know those are very sensitive. Maybe do an inspection of the brake lines and go from there. (Lot's of info on that happening during lift installs).

On a side note, when you finally do decide to move on to a new vehicle, you think you'll get another 4Runner? Basically, I'm asking if we'll have another several years of inspiration and awesome photos after your current one is retired.....we need our fix man!

Ya, I'm sure he clipped something. It's still annoying...the runner has been giving me some grief over the past couple of months....:smash:

I've talked briefly about what my next vehicle would be. I was thinking along the lines of a 1st Gen Taco. I've always wanted to just go haywire with one of those things and mod it to pieces. With that being said, the 4Runner will always be mine. I may just get something on the side! :hat:

Wheel bearings are a common failure- I've replaced mine- 3 times so far. Each side went bad and one of the replacement bearings quit because the seal was torn and it got ruined. All good now!

I GUARANTEE they stretched an ABS line and broke it, especially if they did it right and replaced the rear dust seal.

I can knock this repair out so quick now it's ridiculous, lol.

What shop did you take it to?

Obviously you're having some other issues now, but would you recommend them? I've been looking for a shop in the area as the local dealers kind of suck!

How have the 255s been in today's snow?

You can repair a stretched ABS line/broken one? Care to give me some advice or is there an existing thread?
