I actually looked at the Nissan Murano when I was shopping for a SUV two years ago. The Nissan Murano was a great deal, but I could not overlook it radical design, too funky for me. The interior was too futuristic and made from some of the cheapest material in its class.

J.D. Powers can twist a survey to show anything they want to. If you take a look at the Edmunds.com ratings (which are determined by owners right from their input online) you will see that the 4Runner has a better owner's rating then the Murano (94 to 92 out of 100). I find Edmunds' ratings to be more accurate and non-bias.

Considering the fact that the 4R outsell the Murano by a landslide, they probably didn't get a large enough sample (i.e.-participants) for the survey and had to extrapolate the figures which skews the results in favor of the Murano (if I can remember correctly when I took Statistics some time ago). The Murano is a fine crossover, but the only thing it can do better than the 4R is negotiating curves. Its ride is much too harsh. I drove it as a rental for a week. Funny thing is that I see a whole lot more Muranos in the greater Chicago area than I ever saw back in SoCalif.

Basically it is. They are almost identical to each other from the interior except maybe nicer leather and trim in the Infiniti. You can get the same luxury features on both like Xenon lights, memory seats, power adjustable pedals, and nav. The main difference is the Infiniti is more like a sports car and the Nissan is like a family sedan. Murano/FX are not like the 4Runner GX/470 where they are mechanically identical. The Infiniti has more power, tighter steering, firmer suspension, and nicer sounding exhaust note.

The Murano actually has a CVT tranny whereas the FX35/FX45 has a traditional 5spd. It feels a little weird driving it because there's no gear shifts at all. Occasionally the CVT hesitates before adjusting the gear ratios (downshifting) when you give it some gas. Unfortunately, I haven't experience its effectiveness driving up a steep grade.

The Murano and the FX are totally different SUVs or should I say cars. The interiors are very different. They have different instrument panel, gauges, HVAC controls, steering wheel and seats. They almost have no common components inside and very few common exterior components as well. IMHO, the FX is a much nicer car than the Murano. I pass up on the FX because of the lack of cargo room.
