Jackson Hole, WY for the eclipse- What to do, Where to go?

For a great view and quick elevation gain take the ski gondola from the ski lodge up to the top of the mountain. It's the access to a steep ski run in winter and a great way to get above the tree line in summer. I took it up to 10,000 feet quite a few years ago and hiked about 4 hours from there to Marion Lake with a girl friend. I saw a moose right by the lake there the next morning. It pranced around for an hour or more before running off down the canyon. You need backpacking gear to go there and a back country permit. It's too far for a day hike. From there I hiked down and out of the Tetons through the canyon below Marion Lake and across the meadows back to the ski lodge. Saw a young bear up close and personal on the way out. Luckily he ran off when he saw me.

Unfortunately, a section of the north/south portion of the road collapsed into the Snake River. Due to agreements with various coalitions, there does not seem to be any expectation that this road will ever be reopened. Only the section to the ranch and the north section to the river are open at this time.

Too bad, as that was a wonderful, serene drive along the beautiful Snake River.

Thanks for the update. It is too bad about the road closure. I last drove the road in 2013 and the views were spectacular.

Ugh I should have gone there. It was right across from the place we were staying at but we went to Bubba's instead and I was not impressed.

You're a brave man. The Tetons is my happy place. Actually bought the 4Runner to go down that road. But I wasn't coming close to it for the eclipse (actually got back from Colombia the day before). We have friends who live there and they posted a video of the traffic at dawn. It looked worse than Bogota traffic. And Bogota was worse than New York.

Y'all are dead on about Yellowstone. It's everything you go up there to get away from. We'll be on Teton Crest next year, I'm turning 50 in the backcountry, but the closest we'll get to Yellowstone in the summer ever again is Lizard Creek campground on the north end of GT.

If you're looking for 4-wheeling, GTNP isn't the place. It's for two-footing.
All that said. I'm sad I missed it there. Looked like a fun time. Next one is coming through Austin in 7 years. Y'all stop by. I'll have something on the grill.
