SNOW and Requirements

All of these have the potential to be snow runs, of course that is based on weather which None of us has control over and currently we are experiencing Spring warmth all this week.


REQUIREMENTS
Good Attitude
Snow chains(to meet CHP requirements on highway when travelling Mtns during winter)
Food and Water for 1-2 days(be prepared for Murphy)
Good Attitude
Recovery gear(tow strap etc.)
Camera
Proper clothes for changing weather conditions
Good Attitude
Chair, Toilet Paper standard stuff for being out.
Willingness to Learn, Listen and Help
Obey Tread Lightly principles


Leave at Home
Bad attitude
Alchohol/ Drugs


All So Cal T4R events are made to be family friendly and fun for everyone. Prefer that you look into or have a CB for communication on the trails.

I'm missing chains and recovery gear... can we still participate ? I'm down for any of the options as long as its light to mildly moderate can't afford to be stranded for the weekend lol
 
The recovery gear you can get away with not having as a couple of us will have some with us. However I strongly encourage anyone that is planning to attend these runs or offroad on their own to purchase and keep recovery strap, shackles etc in their vehicle.

The Snow chains are not needed for the trail run, they may be required by CHP depending on weather/ road conditions to drive up the Mountain. Generally in 4wd vehicles do not need to put them on if they have M&S rated tires but are required to carry them in the vehicle. As copied from Caltrans website conditions/requirements go like this for winter driving conditions.

R1: Chains are required - snow tread tires allowed.
R2: Chains are required on all vehicles except four wheel drive vehicles with snow tires on all four wheels(chains carried in vehicle).
R3: Chains are required - all vehicles - no exceptions.
R1 and R2 are the most common conditions. The highway is usually closed before an R3 condition is imposed.


Trail difficulty is listed as Moderate for option #2 Jacoby Canyon and is rated by the Forest Service as Blue Square. I have watched a completely stock Sequoia go up Jacoby Canyon with no problems in dry conditions. HOWEVER always be prepared with extra food, water clothing especially when in the Mountains during winter as weather conditions are able to change rapidly possibly stranding people. I do have a Forest Service radio and can call dispatch if an emergency should arise.

As far as vehicle damage.... stupid driving even on the easiest of roads or trails can break stuff. Also when off-roading damage is ALWAYS a possibility, but on the trails listed it is not likely unless you don't take the time to think. That is why I had willingness to Learn and Listen.

Like Pikeman stated we will have enough recovery gear to help people out if need be but its always a good idea to stock up on that stuff. I have a brand new set of Smittybuilt element tracks to test out on the first person that gets stuck!

he's the man with the plan, I will have to look into some recovery items this year. on top of my list of things to get recovery stuff, tire inflator, and cb radio

I went up to big bear yesterday and ran gold mountain with no major problems. There is almost no snow on the front side, but once you enter the back side there was more ice on the trail than actual snow. Took 3n16 out to fawnskin.

Please elaborate on the directions. I will be leaving from I5 near Camp Penalton. If you could post a street address or something alone those lines that would be great. I will use google maps.

OK so far the majority are saying ANY and the few making a slection are choosing B I will modify the choices tomorrow if it looks to stay that way to just choose that run.

Once the run is fully decided I will post the street address to the meeting spot. The traile head is still a bit of a drive.

Saturday 14 January 0800hrs.

Meeting at Big Bear Discovery Center 40971 North Shore Drive (Highway 38), PO Box 66, Fawnskin, CA

The run will be Jacoby Canyon to 3N16 through Holcomb to Polique Canyon coming out in Fawnskin. Lower moderate but still ok for stock 4wd and can get a 2wd through with help especially with snow on ground. I will check weather regularly and try to update on conditions. Also you can call the Caltrans road conditions number to check for chain requirements 1-800-427-7623.

I just scored a pretty sweet inexpensive place to stay Fri. night. I'm heading up early on Fri with my fiance to hang around town. It sure beats leaving here at 5:30 in the morning on Sat.
Any google maps of the route?
I don't have a CB. Is it worth looking into buying one? I've been on the fence about getting a CB or Ham. Seems like there is alot of debate about both.
I'm sure a hand held would do fine.
 
Triumpth, I will be leaving from OC at 5:30am to get there by 7:30! It is exactly 2 hours from Mission Viejo.

Will anyone else have radios, is so then what channel do you guys want to be on?

I have a set of 22-Channel FRS/GMRS Two-Way Radios.

I'd like to add a CB in the future but it will have to wait.

Ok CB/HAM debate. There is no comparison between the two, however here are my thoughts on it. CB is what most people have in their vehicles so you have a better chance of being able to talk within the group or nearby radios. HAM has a much clearer, stronger sound and signal, and the range is almost infinite with repeaters so you will always be able to get someone. Bad side to HAM you need to have a license and few people have them, but more and more are getting their license and running them in their rigs. I run both a CB and a HAM.


CB channel will be channel 31.
 
Picked up a Midland 75-822 CB for a great price. It's a handheld which is perfect for me. Especially since I want to get licensed for a HAM radio for more remote solo runs.
 
I'm also picking up a handheld cobra cb radio tommorow!! So far it looks like I will be getting Saturday off but won't find out for sure until Tuesday. I'm stoked to finaly attend a monthly meet!! I live in Fontana by the 210 and 15 freeways if someone wants to ride up together Saturday morning.
