When we went to Durango CO a few years back we took a ride to Silverton... It looked like this, though perhaps not as extreme

Just adding, Hokkaido is the name of the island (not a town/city in case anyone was thinking so), like how Maui and Oahu is an island of Hawaii. Unsurprisingly, Hokkaido is the Northern most island of Japan where you put your toothpaste in the fridge so that it wont freeze on your bathroom countertop.
