Was going to post a couple mod threads but decided to make an official build and hopefully adventure thread. I need to be better about taking pics when I go out and also just going out an adventuring more in general. It was a busy spring/summer last year.

Originally had a 2010 SR5 which I didn’t really mod at all. Loved it but didn’t like the more refined look of the SR5s. Always had big plans to mod it, remove chrome, “trail” it, etc, but happened upon my current rig and figured that would be a better start. Bought this Super White 2016 Trail in December of 2016.

The night I got home with it. Almost wrecked on the highway on the way home. I came through the fog and some moron was going about 20 MHP, no lights, trunk open flopping up and down. Scared the shit out of me.

Almost immediately came the new wheels and tires: 17x8 Grey Level 8 MK6 (0mm offset) & 275/70/17 BFGoodrich All-Terrain T/A KO2 E rated Tires
Also added a couple Grand General 77650 Amber Thin Line 6-LED Markers

Got some Shrockworks Sliders w/ dimpled tread plates as part of a group buy. Bit the bullet and got the damn TRDP bumper valance. Also got a Set of Baja Designs Amber Squadron-R Sport LED fogs.

Got a Gobi Stealth rack as part of another group buy. Got anxious to install it, had the day off from work, everyone else was working, so I worked out a solo install method. This are the most recent exterior shots I have as of 2/18/18. Need to get out there and take some more!

Next thing I took a picture of was my KC HiLites Cyclone hood light mod. Had 2 of these I’d got for free so I decided to install. I needed something to mount the switch to in the engine bay, and I still needed to installed my Overland Equipped sPOD/fuse block mount, so I used that. Lights are mounted in a double wall section of the hood with self tapping sheet metal screws. sPOD coming at some point soon.

If you take the hood liner off, you’ll almost be guaranteed to break some of the plastic poppers. Lowes sells some plastic pins marked for a Ford that work perfectly. About 2/$1.

After several iterations of various storage boxes, I decided I wanted drawers or some type. Still working on that, but the first thing I needed was a solid “cargo plate”. Bought some ¾” birch plywood, installed 7 ¼-20 rivnuts (4 back and 3 front), glued some outdoor carpet to the board, and bolted it down. Decided I wanted to leave the back 2 tie downs and also decided to leave the foam in to help deaden sound. The black plastic pieced from the side panels stick up higher than the bolt holes anyway, so I used some basic spacers over the bolt holes (just to eliminate any flex the wood may have). Front holes are about ½ inch lower than the back ones. I used a ½ steel nut as a spacer in front and ¼ inch nylon washers on the back holes. I think I used 2-2.25” stainless bolts are large washers to bolt the platform down.

Finished board – used a soldering iron to melt the holes in the carpet.

Have done a lot but have not got around to taking any pics of anything. Moved my Baja 20" LED bar from the roof down to the bumper. I didn't like the idea of the light shining through the grille slats and losing some of it's power, so I cut it and got a "frame" made at a local fab shop. The diamond shape of the grille slats wont really let you make any clean line cuts, so I needed something to hide the unevenness of it. It will also be painted flat black which I have yet to do. This was a test fit.

Light is mounted in the KC Hilites 20" LED bar bumper brackets for 14-18 4Runners. Works w/ other lights too.

The piece - It will also be painted flat black which I have yet to do. This was a test fit.

Was just planning on using washers and some bolts to sort of "pinch" it onto the grille slots. It's not a great way to mount as the grille holes are pretty big and there isn't much of a surface for the washers to interface with. I think the final iteration will use a flat piece of bar stock with holes in it that run the length of the top and bottom. Also only using 4 of the holes. I had no ideas where I would use bolts so I had them evenly place bolt holes along the piece.

Little handheld hacksaw made short work of the cuts. The grille is super soft and easy to cut.

Test fit. Again this will be flat black.

Yet another iteration of my cargo storage. It's ever changing.

I decided for simplicity over drawers for the time being. Basic 12" high 3/4" birch ply shelf. Glued and pocket hole screwed together. 1" aluminum L stock and with felt added for "tracks/slides". 3/4" ply pull out shelf. Covered in outdoor carpet (interior painted white). Turnbuckled down to the runner. All other mounts installed into it with 3/4" wood screws. Side note - anyone know how much force a 3/4" wood screw into birch plywood would hold?


Water Can does not ride on top all the time. Just up there for pics. I wanted a secure mount for when I take it camping.

Pull out table is sort of a waste of weight and plywood but it's simple which is what I wanted. This is about how far I like to pull it out but it can go out a little more and still hold fine (third pic). Can just be pulled out totally if not in use.

Aluminum L stock "tracks", mounts, turn buckles, etc etc etc.

Bolted the 4 main mounts through the various aluminum pieces to sort of act as washer. Held down to the 4 stock points with quick links and turn buckles. Also moved my L-Track up to the top surface and added E-Track to the corners and behind the water can mount. I am trying out E-track for now because I can source it locally and it's a lot cheaper than L-Track.

I landed on your build thread after searching for 275/70/17 but ended up really studying all your cargo build photos. I like what you did compared to others I've seen and I'm definitely taking away ideas that I'm sure I'll use.

Great work! I noticed you have lights on the rack. How did you run the wiring to the switch pros? I'm trying to figure out something along the same lines.
