JBL 6-Disc with new Amp & Components

I just received my Infinity reference 6.5" components and Infinity 2-ch amp in the mail yesterday. I am about to install it one of these weekends.

Any ideas on how to best install it?

I think I'm going to get into the kick panel on the passenger side to tap into the speaker-level inputs into the amp installed under the passenger seat. Is this tap pre-JBL amp or after the JBL-amp? From there, I will route the speaker wire back to the front doors. Any ideas if there is only only one wire going to each door and splitting inside the door panel?

Any help would be much appreciated. BTW, I just got my 4Runner and love it. i no longer want to drive my "everyday" car, my 97 Civic.

My Plan to address the JBL System

I've had too many stereos stolen from my Honda Civic. And this is the reason why I am going to try to go for the "stock" look. If it doesn't sound very good, I might just have to get a new HU as well. ;):

The JBL-Synthesis sounds "nice". It doesn't distort much, but the crispness and umph just isn't there. I've recently bought an Infinity 2-Ch amp, Infinity Reference components, and Infinity Basslink and they're ready to install.

I know the components are going to outpower the other speakers powered only by the JBL HU, but since this is stereo, the front speakers are the most important speakers for staging anyway, no?

I'll post pictures of the install as I do it. Does anyone see anything wrong with this plan?

Question about Stock Sub Signals

Does anybody know why there are 4 signals going to the sub?

WFL+ (WF+)
WFL- (WF-)
WFR+ (WF+)
WFR- (WF-)

I'm trying to do speaker level inputs for my amp/sub setup. I've also included the .pdf of the wiring diagram.

That would indicate the sub driver is a dual voice coil design with each coil being driven from it's own amp channel. I've seen several posters say the driver was a DVC, but I expected both coils to be driven in parallel off of one channel.

Thanks for the diagram. I was wondering how the 8 channels of amplification were divided. In addition to using 2 channels for the sub, I'm surprised to see the rear tweeters wired in mono.

I wonder if each amp channel has the same power rating...probably likely given two channels being used for the sub.

Oh nice. Thanks for the new found knowledge. Makes sense. So if I were to use these as speaker level inputs, would I just use one of them?

Since low frequency sounds aren't really used in stereo sound?

Would I get better performance from my speaker level inputs if I were to put them in parallel?

Also, according to the diagram, are the +B and +B2 the remote turn on for the amp?
 
dual sub outs from amp

Don't confuse the non-directionality of bass frequencies with how music is mixed. Directionality by frequency refers to the human ear, on average and depending on the individual, being unable to spatially locate frequencies below roughly 80 hz. When mixing stereo tracks, there's nothing that technically keeps the sound engineer from mixing bass into one channel only. If you use the right channel sub out and you get a weird mix that only has bass information in the left channel...you may not hear any bass at all(read on).

The problem here is, we don't know how the JBL amp is deriving the sub out signal. It could be simple individual low pass filters on each channel that you would need to sum to feed a complete signal to a single voice coil sub...or lose half the bass signal, relative to your main frequencies, if you use one output. Or, JBL could be summing the L/R signals first and then sending an identical low passed mono signal to each coil of the sub...which would let you use only one output in your proposed setup. There could be other variations on these 2 themes regarding the ordering of summing and filtering, but ultimately either each coil is seeing a unique signal or the same signal, but we can't tell from the block diagram.

The safest solution would be to feed both sub signals into your new amp and bridge (sum) to mono there if you're using a single coil driver. Tweak the crossover frequency if you want (I'd start full range), but there may or may not be a corresponding high pass on the main channels. An existing high pass would create wholes in your spectrum if you crossed your sub lower than the JBL's high pass if it has one.

Not sure what you mean by wiring the speaker level inputs in parallel.

I'm not positive, but +B and +B2 look like main power for the amp...that's a 20 Amp fuse on the line. If you look at page 1&2 of your diagram, you'll see another 20 amp line feeding the head unit. The JBL amp probably uses the presence of a L/R signal to come out of standby, no need for a separate turn on signal...or it's simply always on like any other switched circuit.

After actually reading the manual for the amp, it turns out I should be able to keep the stock 8 inch sub and still add the Infinity Basslink.

The speaker-level signal I used for the components is retained in the amp and passed through to the RCA outputs. Therefore I could just hook up the RCA's from the 2-ch amp to the Basslink. Sure simplifies my setup.

And also, I found that I could just tap into the "ACC" line going into the stock JBL amp. It is working perfectly now. Thanks.

Now I just have to find those two seat beat bolt covers... damn it! :D

I'm looking to tackle a subset of your effort - probably just the Infinity Sub for now. Where did you find information about disassembling the rear trim panels and other bits to access the amp in the rear? Did you buy the appropriate manual from Toyota? I wasn't able to find it on the forum, but then I may not be searching correctly.
