JBL Head Unit Hiccup

I have the JBL 6 disc/10 speaker system. Last night, while I was listening to the radio, I couldn't change the volume from either the steering wheel or the actual head unit.

I also couldn't make adjustments to any of the settings (ie. bass, mid, treble, fade, balance or surround). The only thing the tuner knob on the head unit would do was change radio stations.

The other steering wheel and head unit controls worked properly though.

After shutting the engine down and restarting it, the problem disappeared. I'm not sure what to make of this. I know every once in a while you need to restart your computer due to software hiccups, but is this the same thing?

Has this happened to anyone else? Should I be concerned about this?

The same exact thing happened in my 04 sport with JBL. It has only happened once. I'm not worried about it!

There is a TSB for that problem and to fix it the replace the amp in the rear. I had mine done last year and it never happened again. The TSB said it only happened in cold weather which is when I had the problem.

Hey, thanks for the heads up...I'll mention it at my next oil change (where I also plan on getting sport pedals and a UT trailer hitch cap -- Hook 'em Horns!).

One question...do you have a link to a website that provides a comprehensive and updated list of TSB's and recalls?

I don't think the TSB applies since it was supposedly fixed after 2003.

Here's what the TSB says:
When first starting the vehicle, some customers may experience a condition where there is static noise from all channels of the audio system or no sound from the audio system. This condition typically occurs on cold mornings. Once the amplifier warms up, normal operation is restored. An improved JBL amplifier is available to address this condition.

Doubtfully but anything is worth a try.

My wife is the primary driver of our 4Runner and she has experienced this problem twice within the last 5 or 6 weeks. I also don't think this is a rear amplifier issue as it was replaced about a year ago when it failed totally. I have not reported it to the dealer but plan to do so before we roll out of warranty. Given that it is infrequent I really don't think there is much they can or will do about it.
