JBL head unit versus all others

I need to know what is different about the mounting of the JBL HU versus the non JBL. From looking at pictures on the forum it looks like the non jbl radios are set back in the dash whereas the JBL one sits out flush with the silver dash trim. The non jbl's appear to also have a black trim ring around them. Is this trim part of the silver dash piece or is it seperate? Can someone please elaborate on this? I'm trying to figure out what it would take to install a non jbl or scion HU in my sport that came with the JBL system.

Kinda confused about what your asking, as all double dins are gonna sit the same..

The only difference is you may need a different trim piece, people who have the JBL or navi head units usually go for an urban runner's dash trim piece for a double din radio.

This is the JBL, it sits out more flush with the silver trim. The face of the radio is much wider. This is what I have.


My question is what do I need, trim wise, to install a non JBL, Toyota/Scion HU?

I currently have a double Din JVC in the dash and hate the radio and the way it looks in the dash with the aftermarket dash kit. So I'm trying to figure out what I need to intstall a non JBL Toyota radio.

The only difference is you may need a different trim piece, people who have the JBL or navi head units usually go for an urban runner's dash trim piece for a double din radio.

This may answer that question. What exactly is the Urban Runner trim piece? Is it just the black square trim piece around the radio or the whole silver piece?

you can install a nonJBL HU, but you need the SR5 nonJBL radio bezel. It's the whole front dash cover. About $350 online. ALSO, the HVAC display/controls will fit funny. Need to replace that too if you want proper fitment. This at the dealer will be big money $1200ish, but you can find them on fleabay for $100-200. I got mine for $75 (guy didn't know what he had).

This is my experience:

My truck came with JBL 6changer. I took that out and got the OEM NAV (fitment-wise, it's identical to a nonJBL radio). I eventually replaced the whole radio bezel and HVAC display/controls. Whole set up looks like it came from the factory (the way I like it).

When one converts from nonJBL to JBL its easy (lots of dash kits out there), but more difficult from JBL to nonJBL.

Sorry for the bad picture, I sold this bezel a while ago so I can't take another pic. BUT, notice the top one, you will notice black plastic the surrounds the radio whereas the bottom one is not there.

I always thought my non-JBL SR5 hvac controls seemed smaller than my 03 that had the JBL, but I just always assumed that I was crazy. I never realized there were 2 different ones

Yeah, I found all this out the hard way. Lots of info on how to install OEM NAV, but very few mention of these details. Pretty stupid actually (Toyota having different bezels/HVACs), but it is what it is.

I agree, it's difficult to pin-point which bezel is best for your application. SR5 vs. Limited vs. JBL vs. non-JBL,...............

From what I see, it's best to get an SR5, non-JBL bezel. It seems that there are more dash kits for the non-JBLs. It's been awhile since I was knee deep in this, but that is what I recall.

Urban Runner Trim Ring

Tried to See if the Urban Runner Trim Ring would work for the Scion FRS T10004. It Does NOT. Will fit Bezel opening it looks like for Limited with JBL But FRS Stereo is too Wide. :doh:

Sorry I read this thread twice and still not sure. It looks like you can not replace the JBL with the urban runner trim and a double din stereo without replacing the entire HVAC panel?

Urban Runner trim ring opening is roughly 7"x4" for Stereo. The trim ring itself will fit Limited JBL Bezel. The Scion T10004 front is about 8". So anyone have aftermarket Double Din and Urban Runner trim ring replacing a JBL system?

Why would you want to install an original non-JBL Toyota HU in place of the JBL one? I don't see any benefits gained for doing this :shrug:, plus there will be issues with fitting (as some folks have pointed out above) as well as wiring.

Better go with an aftermarket HU (if you dislike the equipped JBL) for more convenient features as many people on here have done.

I think UrbanRunner dash trim is for non-JBL. There are aftermarket dash kit for people with equipped JBL HU
