Subwoofer just crapped out last week in my JBL Synthesis sound system (less navigation). The foam surround finally separated from the cone.
Purchased a Rockford Fosgate P3SD2-8 as a replacement. It is dual voicecoil 2-ohm to match the existing subwoofer. The RF sub appears to be of very good quality, stout in design, and has nice spring loaded wire connectors. A bit pricey but I wanted a good quality speaker that would last me a long time. It is shallow in depth, so there is no interference with the back of the enclosure. I'd like to say it's a drop-in replacement, but not quite.
I was unable to use any of the existing (6) screw holes in the enclosure to mount the new sub. I cut some 1/8" thick temporary shims to center the sub in the hole and used the (8) new screws that came with the sub to mount it. I first drilled a pilot hole to match root diameter of the new screw to prevent any potential cracking of the plastic. The shims also wedged the sub in place to assist in drilling and installing the new screws.
To alleviate any potential vibration or rattling, I used the existing JBL plastic ring and existing waffle style plastic grill. A bit of modification was necessary to make it work. To mount the ring, I first glued a piece of 1/16" foam to the back side (to eliminate any potential rattle) then mounted it on the perimeter of the new sub. I used (2) existing screws and existing holes in enclosure to mount the ring.
Next up, the waffle grill was modified to reduce it in thickness by about 1/8". I ground the tabs down on the bottom so the grill would sit flush with the plastic ring. It is secured to the ring with some double sided tape. I also cut some strips of carboard to about 3/4" width and wedged it around the perimeter to fill the small gap between the perimeter of sub and the enclosure as a precautionary measure to again avoid any potential rattle.
The service manual I had on file must have been for another model year of 4runner as it shows different color wiring than what I had. For reference here's what my 07' has for wiring to each of the subwoofer coils:
(+) Red with Blue stripe
(-) Yellow with Brown stripe

(+) Black with Brown stripe
(-) Green with Brown stripe
Overall, I'm quite pleased with the sound quality. The new sub feels like it has a bit more punch that the OEM but I wouldn't say it's a significant improvement over the OEM sub. The OEM amplifier really limits the capabilities of the new sub. Perhaps one day in the near future I'll go full custom and install my vintage Punch 150HD amps, build a custom enclosure for my JL Audio 10W3 sub and really finish off what left of my hearing
