JBL speaker replacement questions

Hey Everyone,

I searched for an answer to my problem but I couldnt find an answer. I have the single disc jbl synthesis system on my truck and want to install a set of a/d/s 346is 6.5" components. My question is where does the tweeter and front driver signal split? at the amp? somewhere in the door? I ask this to find out where I have to put the crossover.
My second question is do I need a seperate amp to power the components? The back of the components says 4ohm amp recomended and has an rms of 20. Or can I just drop in the components and be done?
From my search I read that I can just tap the wires coming out of the factory amp and use that signal into a new amp to power the components. Any help would be greatly appreciated! I only know the basics when it comes to this stuff. Thanks.

The wiring is split in the door.

The wire goes from the door harness, to the tweeter, then is split and looped back in the tweeter plug into the harness down to the midbass driver.

Easiest way is to mount the crossover in the door. Also, your factory HU should be able to drive the components just fine. Try that first, and if you decide you want more power, you can always add an amp later.

Thanks for the quick response Teckis300. So I should cut the wire before it hits the tweeter the first time and plug that into the crossover right?

Also, do you have a template for the mdf cutouts you made to mount the mid and tweeter? Thanks.

Yes, cut the wire before it hits the tweeter and send that to the crossover.

For the baffle template, I simply traced around the stock riser. You'll need to seal the riser against the baffle with some type of glue/sealant since it does not sit completely flush.

The cleensweep won't serve any purpose in this application. It would only work if you wanted to sum the sub output with the full range front output to feed to an aftermerket amp and do the crossovers there. And in the end probably isn't worthwhile...do it the right way, spend less, and get an aftermarket HU.
