It's half marketing/ half warranty protection.. by removing the lower frequencies, they're prolonging the life of the speakers by not subjecting them to the abuse associated with sub-woofer frequencies.
A simple sine sweep audio track will show exactly where the factory subwoofer is high passed, and at what rate it rolls off.

I have sold and installed this product for over a decade, and never to a "classy audiophile," however I am tempted to try one in my 4Runner solely to restore those missing sub-woofer frequencies. The technology is proven, and when used in moderation, should be able to remedy the issue.
