JBL System Sound Quality

The V8 is phenom. The independent rear susp is incredible. Can't wait to track it. Should way outperform my previous car as it has wider and shorter wheelbase, lower, amd more powerful.

It's gonna eat up all the camaros on the track.

lol.. id have to learn how to load youtube.. I actually bought the HU for the backup camera.. But wanted a large screen as OEM nav system.. I shop for deals.. but as always one thing lead to another. "its only 50 bucks more and I get a better unit" and same goes for everythig else.. I was going to buy a baby amp to fit in the glove for 80. then saw this deal and its can supply all 10 speakers and then some. I feel I almost have an addiction with online shopping now.. I should stop.

I getcha. Makes sense. I use my old GARMIN Nuvi. I used to work there and got a great deal on it. Well, you better not start visiting Woot.com! :yield:

I can't speak for the new silly looking Mustang but the previous body style's upgraded OEM radio wasn't to bad I didn't experience it to long though as I couldn't let any other GM people see me riding in a Mustang and it was only a V6 soooooo.....it was almost as gay as a v6 camaro

ROFL!! Pimp!!!!

yeah.. I jumped on it and it was cheaper then ebay, and amazon.

Ebay had it for 180 amazon had it for around 230. I posted here yesterday. It would have been nice if people needed it also. Almost like my wife couponing we get free diapers and formula from it. So I can dump cash on my hobbies. Sigh I feel guilty :/

Haha! I hear ya! I never get anything for myself because I always see my wife slaving away trying to cut corners. When we do have a bit of "free" money, I let her use it. I feel guilty when I spend.

I did not realize how comfortable we were living before our baby and 2 incomes. Went vacation to Mexico 2x a year. But our son is totally worth it. I still get to enjoy my hobbies to a certain extent. Reduced to 2 motorcycles and 2 cars. Im sure its temporary until she finishes school.

Ill update once I install.. Maybe a while since I cant seem to find the time with babysitting. I still have a couple items I have not installed yet due to lack of time.

Again Im not aiming for a lot of thump as I were a teenager. Just balanced sound. Without all the distortion.

Yeah, I don't really know what life is like with two incomes and kids. :) When our first was born 12 years ago we decided to have my wife stay home. I grew up with both my parents working and rarely saw them so-to-speak. I never wanted our kids to experience the same thing (though I do not hold any ill thoughts of them as they did give me a great childhood and loved us). I just wanted my wife and I to raise our kids. We home school our three. We don't do a lot of extracurricular activities and such, but we have a great little family :)

Well, get the kiddo/kiddos out there and teach them a thing or two about vehicles, bro! :)

Balanced sound?! Crazy talk! You can't get that with a JBL Synthesis. Hahaha! Can't wait to hear back on how your install went...and sounds!

For me the sound quality of the JBL system is tolerable, but not the best (I have the 8 speaker system with navigation). It has some bass, and since it's handled by a sub it's not too distorted like the mid-bass in a non-JBL 4runner audio system (those sound terrible). The highs are OK, but not the best. It sounds like either the frequency response is not flat, or there's still some distortion. I rode in a car with a Bose system a few times, and it was incredible (I'm aware that Bose isn't that highly regarded in the audiophile world).

I think the first step I'll take is making the interior quieter by adding some sound deadening and a sound barrier. Most of the noise reduction will come from a MLV barrier, plus closing off the door panels. It's a big project, somewhat expensive, and it will probably add 100lbs of weight. A cheap and equivalent way to get the same effect is to wear earplugs and turn up the volume since that also improves the signal to noise ratio, but I think it's illegal (and kind of weird) to drive with earplugs. Less noise in the cabin will make the audio sound better at reasonable volumes, and it should make for more a more comfortable, less fatiguing ride on road trips.

After that, it sounds like I need to replace the rest of the system entirely. In my last car I was able to just put in some good speakers since the HU put out a clean signal. It made a huge improvement (better than JBL except for lack of bass), and the total cost was under $100. It sounds like the JBL HU and amp work together, and the JBL amp probably isn't sending a clean signal to the speakers if it's diverting the bass to the subwoofer.

All I really need is a volume knob and an aux input, so I might leave the JBL boxes in place and just wire in an amp and new speakers. Then if I end up selling the 4runner I can take out the amp and hook up the old stuff to the new speakers and it will have the OEM appearance.

I don't even need all 8 speakers. In my last car I just had two coaxial speakers (medium woofer with a tweeter in the center) in the front doors, and it was fine as long as no cargo was blocking the passenger side speaker. The car had spots for tweeters (empty in the trim level I had), but they were aimed at the windshield, which apparently results in bad sound quality. I never got around to upgrading the rears, so I just set the fade 90% of the way to the front, and I hardly noticed the lack of sound behind me.

The h/u and amp work in tandem. Essentially, in the Synthesis system, the h/u send signals and programming (levels) to the amp. The amp stores this information in memory and then outputs the appropriate levels and signals to the various speakers. For instance, the sub will be told to output low signal x at +2. The center channel will output vocal range at -1 and the tweeters send out s at +1. The woofers in the doors will send mids out at x, etc, etc. The amp is far more than just an amp in our case. Toss a 100-200 h/u in your vehicle with the appropriate harnesses and adapters and use the AUX on it. You probably will not be too disappointed. If you really want, you can use the sub pre-out on your aftermarket h/u and wire to sub and set it at a reasonable level. Doing this will allow you to not fart with the pre-installed amp or speakers and use their decent mids and highs while adding some low frequencies.

I am a sound engineer and run live programs a couple times a week, and I can tell you that the professional JBL live sound speakers, from sub enclosures to speaker arrays are among the best available at any price. Their studio monitors are excellent as well.

Factory premium automotive systems are a different thing entirely, but JBL puts a lot of engineering effort into the systems they develop for Toyota and Ferrari, tuning each system for each model and the acoustics unique to each. They are putting their name and reputation on display, and I cannot believe they would approve a sound system for a vehicle that is as bad as some of the descriptions I have read about on this thread.

They tune and tailor the frequency response through multi-band equalization integrated into the on-board amplification system to optimize the sound for each model they design systems for. If you took a Synthesis amplifier out of a 4Runner and swapped it with one from a Camry, I bet you would be shocked at the difference.

I have the 10 speaker Synthesis system in my '06 T4R - bought the vehicle and it just happened to have this sound system in it with the XM Radio module with a lifetime sub. I am very pleased with the performance of the system, and have had the 4Runner for 3+ years now. I don't understand all the hate aimed at the system. I understand everyone has differing tastes, but jeez! Maybe some of their components or drivers have failed - that would explain the crackling sound I read in one post.

I have adjusted the settings so that the bass, mid, high, balance, and fader are all at 0, surround on, and ASL on. This is how it sounds best to me - and supposedly how JBL intended for it to sound, leaving the other adjustments for people to tailor it for their individual tastes.

If I were to ever upgrade the system, I would replace them with - JBL aftermarket separates (GTO series) and amplifiers, or find some old-stock MB Quart German-made drivers and stay with the JBL amps. The newer Chinese-built MB Quarts suck. Out loud.

Just my professional opinion comparing reference studio monitors and live sound cabinets/line arrays. The factory JBL systems don't come anywhere near the studio experience, but I haven't heard any premium factory systems that sound any better than the Synthesis system in my 4Runner.

We definitely appreciate your valuable input! That said, the JBL Synthesis does suck for those of us that value lows and mids. My Pathfinder had a Bose system that blew the Synthesis out of the water both in clarity and lows. Most of us want to feel and hear the bass more than Synthesis can offer.

I just recently added two crappy JL Audio 10's and an amp to drive them and it made a huge impact. The highs of the Synthesis are okay enough to be passable, but the OEM sub and low-end response of the other speakers suck. Even when I just left one of the aftermarket subs attached, the difference was unbelievable.

Just our opinions :)

The main problem that I have with the JBL system is the lack of signal below 60-70hz. It's just....gone. I added a subwoofer to my stock system and found that the front speakers play lower than the factory sub. What a joke.

i had the Harmon Logic7 (same engineers as the JBL synthesis right?) system in my BMW and the sound quality was much better. The highs were crisp, and most importantly the stock underseat subwoofers played down to 30hz without a hiccup.

They definitely put better products in higher end vehicles. Now if only those damn BMWs were half as reliable as 4runners....

Amen. That's EXACTLY what I experienced, too. The front door speakers put out way more lows (and more clearly, I might add) than the factory "sub." It's just a poor system, even though they call it premium. My old BMW 325is had an awesome OEM system, as well. My wife's old Uplander sounded better than the darn Synthesis! I just started piecing out the Synthesis for some decent hardware and it's sounding a world better. I might also add that the crap I've put in the 4Runner is literally 15 years old and was on the cheaper side even back then. The H/U is the only newer piece of hardware and it was $150 bucks off Crutchfield two years ago.

The Synthesis system I have does not compare to aftermarket systems I have had in the past in different vehicles with Alpine (favorite) / Pioneer / Sony / Eclipse (those Eclipse heads are CHOICE) head units, JBL GT series separates with titanium dome tweeters, crossover filters, and bandpass isobaric sub boxes with twin 10" drivers, twin 12" drivers and some serious amplification, but I just haven't heard a lack of mids or lows as others describe in the Synthesis. I'm gonna put a test / calibration CD I have in my 4Runner and see where the low end drops out. I'll drop back in with the low frequency limit where it drops by 3db. By ear, I predict it will be in the 55-60 Hz region, which is OK for me for now.

Now I am more interested in something that looks OEM that has decent sound quality, and I like what I hear from the Synthesis system, particularly from CDs as a source. XM's highs are lacking no matter what system you listen to it with, FM just sucks in general, and MP3s off of CD or AUX are just so inconsistent from track to track both in overall sound level, and varying bit rates that they drive me nuts.

In all fairness, I have a good buddy who lives across the street from me who has a '14 GMC Acadia Denali with the Bose system in it, and that system sounds better than mine. Not enough better that I am ready to spend $4k to $5k on my 4Runner sound system and lose cargo space to a sub box, but it has higher SPL capability and deeper bass. I know I said earlier that I have not heard other factory premium systems that sound any better than the Synthesis, but I just remembered my neighbor's Acadia, and I think it sounds a little better than the Synthesis.

Don't BMWs come with H/K systems for their premium setups?

Yes, the same H/K that makes JBL and Infinity audio equipment :D. I just wish they had a method to their madness. Why deprive our 4runners of sub 60hz frequency? I just worked on a 2015 tundra with JBL and the factory sub played down to 30-35hz.

I concur. I have heard some suggest that it does respond below 60Hz, so let me say this to them... I would like to feel and "hear" it respond 60Hz and below. The JBL Synthesis system responds rather well when it comes to highs, but to install a sub and then not even know a sub is in there is just absurd and seems more like a marketing/selling point as it's not much use.
