JD's 4Runner Thread

So after a few days with my new to me 06 T4R I figure I might as well start a thread for it. I will update this as I add stuff.

I traded in my 2009 Subaru Forester w/ 46k plus $1000 for a 2006 SR5 w/ 79k. Dealer had the T4R on craigslist for $16800, but got him down to $15000. Saved a lot in taxes by trading in the Forester (valued around $14000) since I only had to pay tax on the $1000 difference. I would have got $15500 if I sold the Forester on my own so I definitely made out, and avoided having to sell the car entirely.

Anyway back to the ride. Its my first 4Runner, 2nd Toyota. Used to have a 92 Celica that was awesome. Its a super clean shadow mica V6 4X4 w/ moon roof. Had 2 previous owners, but had been for sale for a little over a year between another dealership and the used car lot I bought it from. I knew it had the towing package but I found the factory hitch still in the plastic and box in the long back compartment so that's a good sign it was never towed with. The main reason I got it was to tow my 18' Lund Alaskan (approx 1500lbs total w/ trailer).

Immediate stuff:

Oil change to synthetic, cabin filter, air filter, vent visors, front cup holder (MIA), cargo liners, bull bar, change bulb behind HVAC screen. Passenger side is out, figure I might as well change both while im in there. Already found most of the info I need thx to searching and reading my butt of on here. Only have one set of keys so I have a spare and fob on the way. Pretty pumped I wont have to go to dealer to get them programmed!

Stuff I plan on doing in the next year:

New tires, new speakers, some sort of screen CD/Nav, amp/single sub, interior LED's (domes, doors, dash), HID lights, and more...

I love absolutely everything about this bad boy so far!! Here's the pics from the dealer lot, more to come soon!

Yesterday I had the oil changed to synthetic, new air filter, wiper blades.

Today, after a bunch of reading I settled on a set of Firestone Destination A/T's. They ride great so far! The front driver side rim was kinda messed up (cosmetic surface stuff). My buddy at the tire shop pulled the spare rim down and it was the original front one in great shape. Previous owners... :ybrick:

My ebay key came today, had it cut at the hardware store down the street and programmed it in the parking lot. Works great.

Haven't updated my thread since I first got it. So here's a bunch of stuff done in the last year....

Changed virtually every bulb out, 48led panels in the domes (what I get more compliments on than anything lol), did all the door lights, glove box, vanity bulbs, map lights. Cut a 5led strip down to 4 and stuck it in the shifter. Had a remote start installed.

Then had Alex work his magic on my gauges...

The "reset" and "mode" buttons are actually blue now. Like it better that way.

I did the grille, got these $35 mesh inserts off ebay and dremeled out the front license plate mounts...

Rod loft pro, best $120 a fisherman with an SUV can spend, can fit an 8'6" musky rod with about 3" to spare from hitting windshield...

Never initially had plans to lift it but you people and your pictures all day pushed me over the edge :)

Lift part 1 : 5100's @ .85 with FJ coils all around. Incredible ride. Gonna jack the back up with new coils or a DS spacer and set the fronts up another notch when I get around to getting bigger tires. Don't have any real good pics yet but here's the best one...

Looking really good! I plan to get my muffler turned out to the side when I have some extra mulah, but right now saving up for a custom roof rack. Any more mod plans?

P.S. Love the paint picture, I've got a good one too in my album, but your's really catches all the pretty colors!

how is the grill inserts installed? im on ebay looking at this
GXT Toyota 4Runner 06 09 Aluminum Mesh Grille Grill 4pc | eBay

they come with a longer piece of wire that you cut into smaller pieces and twist up behind the grill. super easy to install and uninstall if you want. you cant see the ties unless you are really looking for them, and you cant see them at all after dipping the mesh. i did have to dremel out my front licence plate mounts to get the bottom insert to fit flat. you could cut out mesh around the mounts if you need them tho

Iwant to see some back pics of your install, hopefully u say its not too noticeable in the front, also do these rust? I will paint them backto make it stand out less

i actually see a lil bit of rust (now that you have me taking close up pics haha) but only on the back of the ties. here's a close up of front and rear ties. they are really not noticeable unless you are looking up close for them

i wonder if you put a dab of jb steel stick to hold it in place, would it be better than using those ties, i dont want to see rust on that, but how about plastic dip the whole thing b4 the install.

How can I do this without the Magnaflow part? i.e. I don't want an aftermarket exhaust, but I do want the blacked out and side exit.

Thanks!

Just have a exhaust shop cut off the rear resonator and install a 90deg peice of pipe. You can't paint it with high temp engine/exhaust paint.
