During March, ARB offered a sale on their air lockers. Buy an air locker, get the mini compressor for free ($160 savings). Buy 2 lockers, get the bigger air compressor free ($400 savings)...and the bigger compressor can be onboard air. After discussing with a number of folks, including several mechanics, I decided a front locker wasn't a good idea.

BaerTrax of Dallas is a well-known fab and off-road component install shop. The owner, Josh, has an overland-equipped Taco, newly outfitted Lexus SUV, and several old Land Cruisers and other Toyota trucks. He's the go-to guy for DFW area Toyota off-roaders. His shop installed my rear locker, the mini compressor, and the switches.

Where are the switches located?
 
Well I found my favorite 4runner on this forum, and not even just for how awesome it looks. More because you drive it everywhere, and it just keeps going and going. Oh and the photography is rad! Nice work man, enjoying it to the fullest I see!

How did the battery kill your alternators? I'm not familiar with the science between the two :redface:
 
regarding rear bumpers

Hey, went through your whole build thread! Nice work buddy. I'm only about a year or year and a half behind you lol. Anyways. I have the same question as the guy a few posts behind me had.

Why the switch from CBI to 4x4 rear bumper?

I am looking at both of those options. The 4x4's bumper looks like a fair bit more work to install with drilling out holes, and retapping a few as well. Also I don't really like the rear jerry can holder design on the 4x4's for aesthetics and the fact that is doesn't look like anything locks them in place. I wanted something more like the CBI bumper that is lockable.

I like that the 4x4 supposedly has a better departure angle and weighs 100 pounds less because of what you cut out? So it helps to keep the weight down.

Not sure if you're able to comment on those points at all?

When I was towing my XVenture trailer, I could never get into the back of the truck because the CBI swingout couldn't open fully, unless I unhitched the trailer. So I wanted a dual-swingout. I contacted CBI to inquire about getting a new bumper w/ dual swingout. They didn't reply.

Meanwhile, I had seen a 4x4 Labs w/ dual swingout on a Land Cruiser, and was glad to see they offered a similar model for the 4th Gen 4R. I wasn't crazy about the frame cutting and drilling, but in the end it wasn't all that bad.

I sold the XVenture and bought a Hiker Trailer. The dual swingouts clear the trailer nicely so I can access the rear of the 4R while trailer is hitched.

Weight diff is obvious. I have All-Pro 3.5" rear springs. When CBI bumper was on, truck sat level. W/ the 4x4 Labs bumper, rear of truck is about a .5" higher. That's fine with me because once I load ARB fridge and other gear, it levels out.
 
i think you'd be a good guy to ask this, since you've had the cbi rear bumper and now the 4x4 labs, do you get wobble with the 4x4labs? i have the cbi one now but have seriously considered selling because im tired of the wobble, I've lowered the wheel, deflated, no matter what i get a wobble that shakes the car between 65-75, very annoying. I thought the old springs were the cause, but even the new springs for more weight its still there.

Ah yes, the CBI Death Wobble. I get that at 65mph too and it sucks. I ended up adding a rubber pad between the swing out and rear door latch which helped, but it still wobbles.

I have a CBI rear bumper and have never heard of this before, nor have I experienced a wobble. Is it from the swing arm moving while you drive? It's hard to imagine how it is from the design of the bumper and tire carrier.
