Someone at work is selling a kayak rack made for the cherokee and I would like to know if it will fit the 4runner. I think they are universal so it should fit with no problem right?

What Kayak Rack are they selling? Is it the HullRaiser or Hulley rollers with saddles?

Bottom line the "Mighty Mounts" will be the deciding factor for you. If the person selling the rack is using "universal might mounts" you could easily mount that to the 4R. If the person has the custom fit "mighty Mounts" for their jeep, you may have to buy these mounts for the 4R so you can mount the Kayak Rack.

And put in your 4R info. My SE 4R uses 23H for mightmounts for my kayak holders.

If the Mightymounts that the jeep is using are 23H you may not need to buy anything.

OK I saw the rack today. He is selling the 2 66" bars, and 8 saddles (hold 2 kayacks) as well as the towers. The towers do not fit my truck, the only fit jeeps with rain gutters. My q\uestion is, what is the cheapest tower that will fit my truck?

ok so before I place an order, the yakima control towers will fit my truck yes?

I am not too sure which towers will actually fit the truck.

what is your year and model of 4R. I used to sell Yakima for a few years, so I have been through it all.

I was going to ask you if this was the whole bar system...the bar system gives you a higher weight limit and more options for bikes, canoes ect. then just mounting the kayak stuff too your factory cross bars.

My early guess is you need the LowRider towers to use the bar system he has (around $140) for four towers.

This helps narrow it down.

What the guy with the jeep has is either rain gutter towers

http://www.rackattack.com/yakima-rain-gutter-towers.asp

or Q Towers with Q clips that fit,

But based on what you said before it sounds like he has rain gutter towers which will not work with your 97 4runner.

Final Question: Do you have a factory rack on the 97? This can be bars/plastic running the length of the truck, doesn't have to be the bars running across the width of the truck. If you look at the top of your 4R, if you have some sort of rack up there, even if it is flush to the top of the truck, you should see channels in them. If you have these "channels"

What you need is the "Control Towers" with 2 sets of "Landing Pads #1" Think of the landing pads as the base of the Control towers, this is what custom fits it to your truck. Here is a photo of what I mean. I noticed on the website you have linked they do not have the landing pads, but you will need those to make the Control Towers fit your 4R.

If you have absolutely no factory channels or rack on top and it is smooth you will need Q Towers (4 pack) and Q Clips #62 (2 sets of 2)

If you take a picture of the top of your truck I will know for sure. If you do have two cross racks going the width of the truck there are the options involving might mounts I talked about before. but your better off getting towers, they can hold more weight and you can use the 66" bars to make sure you can fit the kayaks on top. If you have some sort of channel on top the Control towers are the way you go.
You can usually find used Yakima supplies on eBay, also they are onsale at REI.com
