Jeep Patriot - anyone know anything about them?

The new jeeps are a joke, that's why they start at 20,000 for the liberties and the other new ones are 16k and 17k. If your family member wants a barbie truck, with poor ride quality, and have plenty of maintenance issues then tell them to go ahead. At least you will have the satisfaction of knowing you own the superior vehicle. :bigok:

The Patriot (and it's cousin--the Compass) has its advantages. Yes, it's much smaller than a 4Runner, but it also gets much better fuel economy. I don't really see the Patriot and the 4Runner as competitors because they are in a different class.
The 4Runner competes with the Jeep Commander and the Grand Cherokee. The Patriot competes with the "cute-utes", like the Rav4. When you look at it like that, it doesn't surprise me that you couldn't talk your friend into a used 4Runner instead.

Agree with above...the Patriot is more of a small SUV. And in that class, the Patriot is probably the best off-roader of the bunch. It is slow, but pretty capable for the package.
The nice thing is that if your relative does not modify it, then his powertrain warranty is lifetime. And for $2000-3000, you can buy lifetime CHRYSLER BUMPER-TO-BUMPER warranty, which is a bargain IMHO.
If he is not an off-roader, then i would get Honda CRV or RAV4, which are waaayyy better road vehicles.
Or if he likes open air fun, then i would get one of the cheaper Wranglers.

If he wants that "cute" look as it was called above, at least try to talk him into a Toyota mini SUV like the RAV4 like suggested. At least he will have the reliability of a Toyota, and wont be stuck on the side of the road in a few months.

It has a striking resemblence, actually, that puts it high above the styling of the cute-utes imo. It also has a more capable available 4wd system (yes, Trail Rated..LOL) that gives it taller springs than the lesser versions.
Sure, it may not be as reliable as a Rav4, but I'd still take it based on looks alone.

Go sit in a new Liberty and see what you guys think. The front seats are very narrow and the tranny tunnel is so wide it forces your legs into a small area for the pedals and no dead pedal at all since there's no room for it. I've read they do well off road but they aren't made for wider or tall americans and do seem to fit women the best.
For that size of sport ute there's better options if you aren't truly going off road.

Yeah,I thought they were on the same platform but the Patriot does share it's platform with the Compass and the Dodge Caliber. I did look at our neighbor's Patriot and it looked like it can handle mild trails but it looked cheap inside for the money and the rear storage space was not on par with vehicles in it's class and price range. It's actually his wife's car and he said it does ride nice and get good MPGs and is fine for light off roading which he had done with it but it did have it's share of scars on the skidplates since it's clearance isn't much even tho' Jeep states it at 9" which is the same as a 4th gen Runner.
